The Cold War and Consumerism: Crash Course Computer Science #24

Today we’re going to step back from hardware and software, and take a closer look at how the backdrop of the cold war and space race and the rise of consumerism and globalization brought us from huge, expensive codebreaking machines in the 1940s to affordable handhelds and personal computers in the 1970s. This is an era that saw huge government funded projects – like the race to the moon. And afterward, a shift towards the individual consumer, commoditization of components, and the rise of the Japanese electronics industry.

    Again why "honest" capitlists continue to lie and act like there was no Communists achivemants in brunches of sciences (in programming too) ?

    Programing:
    1) OGAS project in 60s – 1st state network before US experiments and Internet;
    2) AI of Buran Space Shuttle project of 80s, that is ahaed of US and west science for abot 25 years;
    3) DRAGON algorithmic programming language of 80s that USA can`t reach yet;
    4) various solutions to searching algorithms and standarts of information interchange;
    5) 1st UAVs for the Moon and Chernobyl;
    6) Supercomputers of USSR;
    7) SOviet Scientists who placed foundations for Intenet.

    You can exept nazi achivemants in technolgy. But thos people are nightamre responsible for the greates mass murder in history of all mankind. But Us, Soviets – We like never existed to U.

    And I read US school history books, where U try to erase our Victories in first Sattelite, first Man in Space, first space walk, first UAV on other planet and hundrets of other achivemants, We made erlier and better than "great" USA. Why nobody talks about Soyz on board computer for the moon race with USA? Liers u are.

    Its a little sycophantic to give so much credit to our government. You do say, even in your own presentation that Japanese consumer level products came in and dominated despite (though perhaps because of) our government spending so much. You can't simply assert that the NSF is beneficial just because they spend money because you have to take into account what else that money may have been spent on and whether it spends money on successful projects or failed projects since failed projects further distort the marketplace by wasting time and resources that would otherwise have been put to better uses. Think about what all those highly intelligent people working for the NSA to spy on us for no benefit might have done in the private sector where they actually have to produce something useful to society to profit.

    That government spending was a misallocation of resources which ended up having a very limited benefit (which is the general trend of how government allocates money in every area) leaving our market open to competition from the Japanese. You always see the private sector overcoming this government interference in the market, not benefiting from it. This goes way back to steam ships railroads and airplanes and continues to this day with rocketry and drones and even disaster relief.

    Just want to say that it was not because of integrated circuits that America beat Rusha to the moon, it was luck. Rusha was actually the one ready to launch first, trying to send their rover Lunokhod to the moon, but due to a rocket failure, it exploded. The US then launched soon after and had a successful mission. Lunokhod was rebuilt and Rusha launched again (this time without the exploding.) and they too then had a successful mission.

    Loving the series, by the way, Just wanted to clear things up regarding how the space race was won. Rusha really was not that far off the mark when it came to space technology then people think.
