Max Holloway hopes to ‘mimic’ Alex Pereira’s two-division champion success

Max Holloway hopes to ‘mimic’ Alex Pereira’s two-division champion success

Max Holloway has done it all at 145 pounds and he’s no less ambitious when it comes to his expectations in the lightweight division.

“Blessed” recently made it official that he plans to move up in weight and join the UFC’s 155-pound roster following a 12-year run that saw him compete primarily as a featherweight and reign as that division’s champion from 2017 to 2019. Holloway had a chance to regain the featherweight title this past October at UFC 308, but lost to Ilia Topuria, who handed Holloway his first-ever knockout loss.

Moving from one deep division to another, Holloway hopes to follow in the footsteps of light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, who claimed the UFC middleweight title from rival Israel Adesanya in just his fourth fight for the promotion. He dropped the belt back to Adesanya in an immediate rematch, but two fights later he won a vacant light heavyweight title by defeating Jiri Prochazka.

Holloway called Pereira an inspiration during a recent Kick stream (h/t Championship Rounds):

“155, cannot wait,” Holloway said. “All I know is, we saw Alex Pereira get finished [by Adesanya], right? Next fight he fought for a No. 1 contender spot. Fought for the title and he’s on a title run right now, a spectacular title run. Let’s mimic it. Let’s do it.”

Since winning the light heavyweight title, Pereira has successfully defended it three times in 2024, making him one of the UFC’s most valuable players. A former kickboxing champion, the 37-year-old Pereira still has plenty of big fights ahead with No. 1 contender Magomed Ankalaev breathing down his neck and all-time great Jon Jones stating his preference would be to fight Pereira should he continue competing after his bout with Stipe Miocic at UFC 309.

Suffice to say, if the lightweight chapter of Holloway’s career is anything close to how Pereira reinvented himself, he’ll be more than pleased.

“I get inspiration in that,” Holloway said. “He’s a beast.”

Scotland Nations League games to be shown on YouTube

Scotland’s concluding Nations League matches against Croatia and Poland will again to be broadcast on YouTube, rather than on television.

Scandinavian broadcaster Viaplay owns the rights to show the games but announced in June 2023 it is scaling back its operations in the UK.

The company will still produce coverage of the matches, but they will be shown on the Scottish FA’s YouTube channel dedicated to the national side.

It follows the same arrangement as the matches in October with the loss to Croatia and draw with Portugal attracting more than 1.5m views combined on YouTube.

Steve Clarke’s side host Croatia at Hampden on Friday before finishing their campaign away to Poland on Monday (both 19:45 GMT).

As well as the Scotland men’s matches, Viaplay held the rights to show the Scottish League Cup and the United Rugby Championship when it announced it would end all coverage of UK sports.

The media group then sold its UK sporting division back to Premier Sports earlier this year.

The deal included its share of the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup, but did not include the rights to Uefa’s international competitions.

A deal was struck between Viaplay and ITV to show September’s matches against Poland and Portugal on the broadcaster’s ITVX platform, with BBC Scotland also in discussions to broadcast those matches.

However, Viaplay elected not to subcontract the rights for the rest of the campaign.

With new deal, Cub Swanson taking things ‘fight by fight’

Cub Swanson knows the end is near, but he isn’t ready to call it a career quite yet.

Swanson (29-14 MMA, 14-10 UFC) will make his 25th octagon appearance when he takes on Billy Quarantillo (18-6 MMA, 6-4 UFC) on Dec. 14 at UFC on ESPN 63 from Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. Ahead of his fight against Quarantillo, 41-year-old Swanson revealed to MMA Junkie that he signed a new contract with the UFC.

“I just signed a new multifight deal, four fights,” Swanson told MMA Junkie Radio. “It’s fight by fight, but this would have been my last one, so I told them I didn’t intend on fighting out of my contract and going other places. I want to stay here. I think it’s fitting, and so we did a new deal. But it’s fight by fight.”

Swanson has split his past six appearances. He’s fought the who’s who at featherweight throughout his career and is happy to draw someone who isn’t a rising contender on a tear.

“I know that he’s tough, he’s gritty,” Swanson said of Quarantillo. “He wants to be in the exciting fights, and he’s been in a bunch of them, so I think that’s what he wants. He wanted a fight like me so he could go out there and have a big performance, something he could be proud of. That’s the kind of fighter I think he is.

“He’s getting up there in age. He’s been around for a little bit, so I like the matchup. I kept getting told stop fighting the youngsters who are on their way up, and I think the last two opponents have been good opponents. They’re guys who like to fight, but they’ve been around for a while. I think the fans appreciate it.”

There was little drama behind their faceoff after the news conference in advance of their Friday fight, which takes place at AT&T Stadium in Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys. During the press conference, Tyson said little – which drew some confused moments from Paul, who said it left him bored without Tyson backing up his previous online banter.

Check out their faceoff, plus the faceoffs for the rest of the card, in the video above.
