A savvy shopper shared her surprise after discovering a Tesco Scan as You Shop feature that speeds up shopping

A canny shopper has expressed her astonishment after stumbling upon a feature that makes navigating Tesco considerably simpler.

Since 2010, Tesco has provided a Scan as You Shop service across its stores, enabling customers to use their Clubcards to obtain a handheld scanner. Shoppers can then scan products as they browse the aisles, making it convenient to bag items on the go whilst monitoring their running total before reaching the checkout.

However, many customers may be unaware that the supermarket chain recently introduced an enhancement that makes the scan-as-you-go experience even more streamlined. In October 2025, Tesco launched the ability to transfer your shopping list straight onto the scanners.

This proves incredibly useful, as it also assists shoppers in pinpointing exactly where items are stocked by displaying their aisle locations.

Buanann Rafferty, from Northern Ireland, is among the numerous surprised customers who have only just cottoned on to this clever trick. She discovered it quite by chance during a routine grocery run at her local Tesco branch.

Sharing her find on TikTok, she remarked: “I was today years old when I discovered this.”

She then panned the camera to reveal her newfound discovery.

Buanann continued: “You can scan your Tesco app and put your shopping list into the scanner… This has changed my life.”

It’s evident that others were just as astonished by the scanning technology. One person responded, “You mean I’ve memorised my Tesco layout and shopping list for nothing.”

Meanwhile, another observer commented, “You know you’re getting old when you’re excited over shopping haha.”

Yet, not everyone was won over. One individual highlighted an even simpler method to complete your grocery shop without stepping foot outside.

The commenter noted, “I just get it all delivered for like two quid.”

How to transfer shopping list to Tesco scanner

Buanann provided a detailed walkthrough on how to sync your shopping list with the Tesco scanner.

You’ll need the Tesco app installed on your mobile. Then, create an in-store shopping list, which can be found in the ‘in store’ section of the app.

Once completed and you’ve reached Tesco, head to the scanner station and unlock your device using the Clubcard within the Tesco app.

Select the List tab on the device, which will display your shopping on screen. It will then automatically mark items off as you scan them with the handset.

You’ll also be able to check how many items are available, as well as whether any products are currently out of stock in the shop.

When finished, simply proceed to the self-service checkout to settle your bill as usual. It really is that straightforward!
