West Ham’s stance on selling Lucas Paqueta this month
It has been revealed that West Ham United are now willing to sell a £150k-a-week star this month, despite Nuno wanting to keep hold of him.
West Ham in major trouble despite respite in the FA Cup
This season has been nothing short of a disaster for West Ham, who are at major risk of becoming a Championship club for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign, as they now sit seven points adrift of 17th-place Nottingham Forest, following a 2-1 loss against the Tricky Trees last time out.
There was some respite for the Hammers in the FA Cup on Sunday, which may have been a welcome distraction, recording a 2-1 victory against Queens Park Rangers after extra-time, but the main priority will no doubt be preserving their Premier League status.
To that end, the Irons have already made multiple additions to the squad this month, and new striker Valentin Castellanos scored the winning goal against the R’s at the weekend.
Nuno & co remain keen on more new signings, however, with negotiations over a deal for Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup recently getting underway, while the likes of Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell and Al-Nassr goalkeeper Bento Matheus are also of interest.
However, it is starting to look like West Ham could also be rocked by a departure before the end of the month, with reliable reporter Ben Jacobs telling GiveMeSport that Lucas Paqueta is open to leaving, amid interest from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
Paqueta’s preferred choice would be a return to his home country of Brazil, however, and the hierarchy are now willing to sanction a departure, despite Nuno wanting to keep hold of the attacking midfielder.
Selling Paqueta this month would be major gamble
It would be a real risk if West Ham were to let the former Lyon man leave this month, given that he has been one of their key players this season, chipping in with four goals and one assist in 18 Premier League outings.
Only Jarrod Bowen has more goals to his name, which highlights the Brazil international’s importance to Nuno’s side, so the Hammers should look to keep hold of him until at least the end of the season if possible.
West Ham now in negotiations to sign “special” £22m player for Nuno
He’s been tipped for a very bright future.
Of course, cashing-in this month could make sense from a financial perspective, as the maestro’s value is likely to drop if West Ham get relegated, and he is the joint-highest earner in the squad at a whopping £150k-a-week.
However, although things aren’t looking good, the seven-point gap to Nottingham Forest isn’t insurmountable, meaning the Irons should not be cashing-in on their best players this winter.
