Nice!! Server rack configuration is the best solution for off grid whole house power! (what I think). Expensive way to save the grid cost. 20 to 30 year payback, generally speaking. I think these systems are more for energy independence rather than being cost effective!!

The best bang for the buck is a home built system VNSZNR LiFePO4 Cells 3.2V 304Ah.. If you take 8 of those Parallel at 3.2v and total 2432 ah. Rack them up in series So if your doing lets say 48 volt you will need 16 rack of 8 for a total of 128. The quick math in me tells me that comes out to about 116,736 usable watts possible I like to round things down to an even 100kwhr total Usable watts you never really want to drain these batteries all the way. But that should in most case scenario get you your home and shop power needs taken care of.. Don't forget you will have to build out a BMS system with this in order to protect the Battery cells but for the money and bulk price per kw hr a lot of guys build a bunch of shelves when they do the home design out of wood idk which is better metal or wood but I suppose if you mess up with metal you got an ark big time. When I was taking my electronics class the rule of thumb was 72 hr of sustainable power at 100% max load is required for the 99.9s of reliability that equals out to 1 minute and 26 seconds of down time per day on average the goal for most corporates or high end environments is to meet or exceed an sla of 99.9999 of reliability which is some thing like 32 seconds a year of down time. In one of the online con ed classes I took on Lifep04 batteries they say 11 years warranty but in reality to meet most industry stands they are saying a max use of 4 years in mission critical applications and at the earliest replacement after 3 years of use. Always love the solar projects you get closer and closer to my hobbies when your in the solar realm. I am a ham operator and I play around with dc voltages including lifepo4 batteries. I wish I had the money and the helpers to demonstrate this in a use case similar to yours to show you how much storage it would be and just how fast you could take your entire property off the grid using this technology. Of course you will need some huge solar panel upgrades to properly charge up a battery bank like that Minimum 400 watt panel 48 panel (Goal is to be fully charged by 2 PM on a good day. ) . As I keep mentioning before having inverters that you can tie together to create 3 phase and offset loads from inverter to inverter also adds to the reliability example Sol ARk units (If I understand sol ark correctly you can add 12 units together per phase of the model SOL-ARK 15K-2P). As always love the content still kinda find it funny those cells look an awful lot like those VNSZNR's that everyone is using at the moment in the hobby land.

Have you considered a residential wind device? I have seen videos on a few new technologies that are more efficient than solar. I would use a combination of both. They don't look like propellers, and they can charge at night.

Andrew, I am looking at the same issue for my panels. I dont like them on the roof and I have a 16 ft shop wall facing south (in TX) that is perfect for a similar setup like your ground mount. I am contemplating creating a system that allows to pivot similarily in the upper 8 ft section of the wall over the ground mount. It would be somewhat protected by the eves if folded down for heavy rain and hail. In a hurricane situation I have enough time to come in with tractor and remove them like the ground mounts.

  30. @JayBeaSea

    November 10, 2024 at 10:06 pm

Hi Andrew! Just as a heads up from a guy who's built really, really heavy racks with computer equipment and UPSes in data centers over the last few decades, you definitely don't want to go 12 batteries in a rack (that would be a 48U rack). Standard rack sizes are 42U, which would give you 10 per rack plus 2U spare for something like a shelf.

The other problem is that you'll need a bus bar to make it easy to pull the charge, but with bars that large you'll potentially end up draining the first batteries connected to the bus at a disproportionate rate than the others. 6 batteries in a rack seems to be about the sweet spot for these setups, based on those kinds of concerns.

    November 10, 2024 at 10:06 pm

Fuses do not, and are not intended to "protect" downstream equipment. They are for short circuit & overload fire mitigation.

  34. @ShaneZettelmier

    November 10, 2024 at 10:06 pm

I think both are cool, but I kind of like the idea of having the whole thing in a server rack with heavy duty disconnects for the panels, it would be easy to move later you could have a rolling rack or even some thing you could move with the tractor if it was big and heavy. But it seems like having everything in a single server rack, electronics and everything would just be very convenient. It would keep it neat and if you didn’t like the way or the place you had it set it up it wouldn’t be hard at all to move it.

Plus, if something big happened, the lake, your parents house power went out it would be portable enough to where you can take it over to them and it would be some work, but you can get them back up and running in a day probably and not have a lot of rewiring and reinstalling it just unplug the rack move it take some panels and some plugs and everything’s already assembled and ready to go. I can see a lot of advantages to that, plus everything in a server rack is fairly uniform, and would look decent too.

    hello man, need your advice
i have hybrid invertor Deye 8 kwt + two those Jakiper but updated version… in specs i see that recommended charge current is 20A…but its too slow and battery fully charged in 5 hours… what is the maximum charge level that will not cause degradation in next few years?

  37. @JoseRamirez-dl7jt

    November 10, 2024 at 10:06 pm

Good evening Andrew. I have been researching residential solar systems over last few weeks with aims to install a solar system when we buy our retirement residence in the next few years. The idea is to ensure energy independence with a system that would allow us to be as net zero as possible while using the grid a backup (pie in the sky goal, perhaps).

So far, I am leaning towards EG4 wall-mounted batteries with at a minimum one 18Kpv inverter. Unless their new line of inverters/microgrids offers equal or better capabilities a comparable cost for whole home applications. Being budget conscious, I have also done research on DIY LiFePO4 battery kits. Based on what I have learned thus far, these kits can significantly reduce in half or more the cost of batteries with storage capacities between 14 and 16 Kwh from 15 to 9 cents per watt of battery storage. However, it looks like these battery kits are suitable more towards off-grid applications, and not so much to grid-tied setups.
    .
Any thoughts on these kits and/or this approach? Is the juice worth the squeeze? Obviously, safety will always trump cost effectiveness in my equation. Do you have recommendations on how to tackle such a project, while capable of passing city inspection and being safe/code compliant?
