Sheffield United lead race to sign Joe Rothwell from Rangers
Sheffield United have recovered from their dreadful start to the Championship campaign and are now said to be leading the race to sign a former English second-tier title winner.
Sheffield United move on after surprise FA Cup exit
Despite Chris Wilder’s men improving their league form with three victories in their last four matches, their extraordinary 4-3 loss at home to Mansfield has left plenty of questions to answer for the Blades manager as they lick their wounds after being dumped out of the FA Cup.
Speaking post-match, the 58-year-old lamented Sheffield United’s collapse at Bramall Lane, stating: “Incredibly disappointed. I said I think the players might be a little bit bored of me going after them – this was an opportunity.
“I picked a team today to win a game of football, the changes that we made, we had to make. I’m not resting anybody – that team I picked, should have been good enough to win. I feel sorry for Adam Davies. The goals that we conceded are ridiculous. The centre forward has dominated the two defenders all afternoon.”
Now, the Blades will put in the hard yards on the training field ahead of visiting Charlton Athletic this weekend, where they could move into playoff contention if three points are accompanied by other results falling in their favour.
Patrick Bamford’s contract extension has given Wilder some stability and experience at the top end of the field. Nevertheless, there is always room to add know-how to the dressing room, especially given that fixtures are set to come thick and fast for the Yorkshire outfit.
With that in mind, Sheffield United have now emerged as frontrunners to sign a star who won the Championship title last term with Leeds United.
Sheffield United leading race to sign Joe Rothwell
According to Football Insider, Sheffield United are leading the race to sign Rangers outcast Joe Rothwell after he was frozen out by Danny Rohl north of the border.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke claims that Wilder ‘sees him as somebody who will improve that Sheffield United midfield’ as they look to make a late charge for the playoff places, and he may be attainable with a quickfire exit on the cards after moving to Ibrox in the summer.
Ipswich plotting move for “exceptional” striker with 74 Championship goals
The Tractor Boys want to bring in a new centre-forward.
Daniel Farke has previously dubbed his technique as “outstanding” and he worked under his stewardship last year, helping to seal Leeds’ promotion to the top-flight.
In a frustrating campaign, Rothwell has made 19 appearances across all competitions this season, registering two assists in total before falling out of favour in Glasgow.
Now, he could be set for a return to more familiar surroundings in an effort to get regular football under his belt, joining a club with ambition of continuing their domestic form to mount a late charge to put themselves in contention for promotion to the Premier League.
