Kompany: Bayern will start from zero despite landmark Koln victory

Vincent Kompany insisted Bayern Munich will start from zero once again despite making Bundesliga history in their 3-1 win over Koln on Wednesday.

Kompany watched on as Linton Maina put Koln into a deserved lead at RheinEnergieSTADION, only for Serge Gnabry to restore parity in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time.

From there, the Bundesliga leaders controlled proceedings and went ahead through Kim Min-jae’s header, with Lennart Karl sealing the win with a fine finish in the 84th minute.

The result maintained their 11-point advantage over Borussia Dortmund in the table, a gap that, from this stage of a season, has never been overhauled.

In addition, Bayern’s 47 points after 17 Bundesliga matches are the joint-best haul in Bundesliga history, matching their own record set in 2013-14 under Pep Guardiola.

Their 66 goals this term, meanwhile, are a new record after 17 games, and while Kompany was pleased with the achievement, he immediately switched focus to the next game.

“I did congratulate the lads, but that will be gone by tomorrow, and it is of absolutely no priority for me that we now have this record,” said Kompany.

“We are in the middle of the season and have not won any titles yet. From tomorrow, we start the second half and everything starts from zero.”

Kompany was also able to provide injury updates on Hiroki Ito, Konrad Laimer and Harry Kane, with the trio all sustaining knocks during the victory.

Kane looked to have picked up an ankle injury in the 27th minute but was able to continue, while Ito jarred his knee when attempting to defend a cross in the first half.

But Laimer’s calf issue could be a problem, especially with Josip Stanisic and Joshua Kimmich both already injured.

“Konny felt something in his calf. We have to wait. We’ll be back to Munich tomorrow, and he’ll have a scan,” he said.

“The others were able to play through. We have many games in a short period.

“Hopefully Jamal [Musiala] and Phonzy [Davies] will be back soon. And hopefully Konny is fine.”
