Despite a truly dire start to the campaign, Aston Villa are flying this season.

Unai Emery’s men sit third in both the Premier League and Europa League and are through to the Fourth Round of the FA Cup following their 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

However, the North Londoners were able to get their own back in quick fashion by signing former Chelsea star Conor Gallagher, who was a target for the Villans.

Fortunately, if reports are to be believed, Aston Villa are not resting on their laurels and are lining up a move for someone who’d be an even better signing than the Englishman could have been.

Aston Villa line up better signing than Gallagher

Given their impressive performances this season and their positions in both the Premier League and the Europa League, it always made sense for Aston Villa to use this window to further strengthen the squad.

One of the players they have most heavily linked with over the last week or so has been Gallagher, with reports from late last week claiming that the West Midlanders were “working on” a move for the Atlético Madrid star.

However, in the days since, Spurs have seemingly won the war and are set to sign the midfielder to a five-and-a-half-year deal.

Now, losing out on a talented player to another side in the same league is always going to hurt somewhat, but fans shouldn’t worry, as it now looks like the club are moving for someone who’d be an even better signing.

At least that is according to a recent report from Turkish journalist Fırat Günayer, who has reaffirmed Aston Villa’s interest in Tammy Abraham, who is on loan at Besiktas this season.

In fact, he goes further than that, revealing that the Villans have made a cash-plus-player offer to the Turkish side, who have an obligation to buy Abraham from AS Roma, for the striker.

The player in question is summer signing Evann Guessand, who would join the Istanbul outfit on a one-and-a-half-year loan deal with an option to buy.

It is unclear whether Besiktas has agreed to this proposal, but if they do, it would be an excellent move by Villa, and Abraham would be a far better signing than Gallagher.

Why Abraham would be a better signing that Gallagher

The first thing to say here is that, in an ideal world, Villa would sign both players.

After all, while things haven’t quite worked out for him in Madrid, Gallagher is an experienced midfielder who, for a time, was one of Chelsea’s most reliable players.

However, there are several reasons why, for the Villans anyway, Abraham would be the far better signing.

The first is that, as things stand, a new reliable goalscorer feels like a far more pressing addition to the team than another engine in the middle of the park.

For example, the highest-scoring forwards in Emery’s squad are Ollie Watkins and Donyell Malen, with seven goals each, and the Dutchman is now on his way to Roma.

Tammy Abraham

It is therefore imperative that the club sign another striker, and the good news is that the one they’re closing in on is in red-hot form.

For example, in 24 appearances, totalling 1726 minutes, he has scored 12 goals and provided three assists.

In other words, the sensational number nine is averaging a goal involvement every 1.6 games, or every 115.06 minutes, which lends credence to journalist Bolarinwa Olajide’s description of him being a “beast” in front of goal.

The other reason the 11-capped international would be an excellent addition is that he already knows the club and is still well-liked by the fans.

This means that he should settle in more easily, and the signing would bring even more positivity to the club at a time when the fans are already in incredible spirits.

Moreover, his record from the 18/19 season is impressive, with him scoring 26 goals and providing three assists as the club won promotion to the Premier League.

Ultimately, while missing out on Gallagher is far from ideal, Aston Villa fans shouldn’t be too upset, as with Abraham, it looks like the club are about to make a far better signing.
