Ryan Gosling’s 88% RT Oscar Nominee Is Streaming for Free Next Month
If you somehow missed the cultural tidal wave that was Barbie in theaters, good news — you won’t have to wait any longer (or open your wallet). Starting December 1, Greta Gerwig’s bright-pink cinematic phenomenon officially lands on Tubi, making one of 2023’s biggest and most beloved films available to stream for free.
Barbie became a genuine global event the moment it hit theaters, thanks to Gerwig’s clever, genre-blending direction and a cast that fully leaned into the film’s mix of satire, joy, and existential dread. The comedy holds an impressive 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned multiple Academy Award nominations, including one for Ryan Gosling, whose scene-stealing take on Ken became an instant pop-culture milestone. Gosling’s performance — equal parts hilarious, unhinged, and unexpectedly emotional — turned “Ken” into both a meme and a movement. Between the Kenergy, the musical number that broke the internet (“I’m Just Ken”), and the ongoing awards-season love, his work in the film remains one of the most celebrated comedic performances in recent years.
Of course, Gosling isn’t the only star in the huge ensemble cast. Margot Robbie anchors the film as Barbie, and is supported by A-listers like America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, and Will Ferrell. The movie follows Barbie and Ken as they leave Barbieland for the real world — only to discover patriarchy, complicated emotions, and the horrors of corporate boardrooms.
How Good Is ‘Barbie’?
Collider’s Ross Bonaime raved about the film, labeling it as an impressive feat that manages to be wholesome while incorporating biting satire:
“It’s easy to be cynical about a film like Barbie, a film that has at least partially been made to sell toys and even makes Mattel a part of the actual story. But Barbie is also an example of how getting the right people behind an unusual idea can make something truly beautiful come out of it, much like The Lego Movie or The Social Network before it. Gerwig has created a film that takes Barbie, praises its contribution as an idea to our world, but also criticizes its faults, while also making a film that celebrates being a woman and all the difficulties and beauty that includes. This also manages to be a film that feels decidedly in line with Gerwig’s previous films as she continues her streak as one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. Barbie could’ve just been a commercial, but Gerwig makes this life of plastic into something truly fantastic.”
