Two men have been jailed for trying to steal a bike from a man at a BMX track in Peterborough. Josiah Charles, 19, Yasir Mohammed, 20, and a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, approached the victim in Orton Malborne at around 3pm on May 12.

The trio attacked the victim by punching him in the head and demanded he hand over his bike, which was worth about £2000. A man who was with the victim managed to get away and film the incident on his phone before calling the police.

The man returned and was threatened by the attackers before they left without the bike. The victim suffered severe bruising but did not need to go to hospital.

Officers were able to review the footage to identify and arrest two of the suspects the next day. The remaining suspect, Yasir Mohammed, from London, was arrested in Peterborough city centre two weeks later.

All three denied attempted robbery. They were found guilty following a trial at Peterborough Crown Court in December.

Charles, of Medworth, Orton Goldhay, Peterborough, was jailed for three years and Mohammed, of Woodcote Avenue, Barnet, London, was jailed for two years and eight months on Monday, January 12. Both sentences included the activation of six-month suspended sentences.

Mohammed was also given a seven-year criminal behaviour order banning him from Peterborough. The sentencing for the 16-year-old boy, from Peterborough, who was found guilty of attempting to rob the second man, has been adjourned until May 8.

DC George Corney said: “This was a frightening ordeal for the victim. The behaviour of the defendants, and the violence they inflicted, was shocking.”

“I’d like to commend the second man for his quick thinking in capturing crucial video evidence using his phone and immediately seeking help. This evidence allowed officers to identify the suspects quickly and was instrumental during the court process.”
