The Bluebirds have moved quickly to announce their first signing after their temporary transfer embargo was lifted
Cardiff City have confirmed their first signing of the January window, with goalkeeper Harry Tyrer joining from Everton
Tyrer joins on a three-and-a-half year deal, which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2029. After a number of outgoings this month, Tyrer becomes only the second permanent signing under Brian Barry-Murphy, following the arrival of Gabriel Osho back in the summer.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Tyrer, 24, said: “I’m very pleased, it’s a massive club. I’m honoured to sign for Cardiff City and I can’t wait to get going.
“Brian has been very positive. I’ve spoken to a few people behind the scenes and they’ve also spoken about how positive he is. He’s told me to come in and work hard. That’s what I’m all about.
“Nathan [Trott] has done very well and it’s about pushing him and getting the best out of each other. I’m very excited to work with Nathan and Matt [Turner]. It’ll be a great goalkeeper union here.
“I came down a few nights ago and had a look around the city and it’s lovely. You see the stadium, it’s massive. I can’t wait to meet the fans and see them celebrating with us.” Sign up to our Cardiff City WhatsApp channel here.
Tyrer was at Cardiff earlier this week undergoing a medical, with the deal delayed solely by the administrative issue rather than any complication with the transfer itself. The shot-stopper now links up with Barry-Murphy’s side as the head coach continues to reshape his squad.
Speaking about the capture of Tyrer, Barry-Murphy said: “I think it’s very important that we strengthened that area of our team to provide real competition in that goalkeeping unit.
“We’re very pleased with the form of Nathan [Trott] and Matt [Turner]. We want to keep pushing forward and keep improving. The signing of Harry is very important for that.”
The signing comes at a crucial time for City, who had been left light in the goalkeeping department. Trott and Turner were the only senior options available, with Ethan Horvath deemed surplus to requirements and academy keepers Jake Dennis and Ewen Griffiths both set to head out on loan. Tyrer arrives from Everton having spent time gaining senior experience away from Goodison Park, on loan with Chester, Chesterfield and, last year, Blackpool, and will immediately provide competition and depth between the posts as Cardiff push on with their season.
Goalkeeper is not the only position Cardiff are monitoring, with Barry-Murphy also highlighting the need for cover at left-back, where Joel Bagan has carried the workload for much of the campaign.
