X is down for thousands this afternoon

X, formally Twitter, has encountered issues this afternoon as thousands of users report problems with the social media app. On Friday (January 16), account holders began noticing problems across the platform on both its app and website.

According to Downdetector, which reports online outages in real time, problems have been observed across the UK, with Glasgow in Scotland seeing the highest activity. Elsewhere, Manchester, Birmingham, and London are current hotspots for problems.

A visit to X’s website currently shows a message notifying of a connection time out via Cloudflare. As of now, over 14,800 users have reported problems, according to Downdetector.

Its statistics show 58 percent of these are regarding its app, while 33 percent pertain to its website. A further seven percent have reported problems regarding their X timelines.

Users who have reported problems have flocked to Downdetector to seek help, also reporting locations where issues are taking place.

One reported how they have been “unable to reply to chat messages as keeps showing disconnected, feed not updating”.

A second wrote: “It is down in NI Belfast the whole site is a no show says error in search engine.” While a third said: “Apparently, Sky is reporting it as a global outage, so it’s probably a DDOS attack.”

Representatives for X have currently yet to publicly address the on-going issue. The news comes just days after X’s current owner Elon Musk confirmed it would finally begin imposing restrictions on “editing of images of real people in revealing clothing such as bikinis”.

The UK’s media watchdog Ofcom launched an investigation into X in response to growing concerns over the use of X’s own AI software, officially called Grok, to manipulate images of women and children to create fake sexualised pictures.

In a post on X on Wednesday, January14, the company said it had imposed restrictions on “editing of images of real people in revealing clothing such as bikinis.

This adds an extra layer of protection by helping to ensure that individuals who attempt to abuse the Grok account to violate the law or our policies can be held accountable.”

“We now geoblock the ability of all users to generate images of real people in bikinis, underwear, and similar attire via the Grok account and in Grok in X in those jurisdictions where it’s illegal.”

Once in force, the ban will apply to all users, including paid subscribers, while editing will be limited to premium users only.
