Police issue statement after woman dies in M6 tragedy
Officers were called to a concern for welfare at the bridge on Downall Green Road, close to Ashton-in-Makerfield, above the M6 Southbound between junctions 25 and 24 at 7.50am.
A woman died at the scene.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said formal identification is yet to take place, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.
The incident led to widespread disruption on the motorway and surrounding roads as closures were put in place.
The force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is investigating and officers are asking for anyone who may have witnessed or been involved in the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation.
The statement added: “This includes anyone who witnessed the incident itself, that may have collided with something in the carriageway at this location, or has dashcam / CCTV footage of the incident.
