Ryan Hurst, known for his key roles in FX’s Sons of Anarchy and AMC’s The Walking Dead, has joined the long list of Hollywood’s who’s who in Christopher Nolan’s latest film, the adaptation of Homer’s epic peom The Odyssey.

The Universal feature is already in production and has a roll call that that includes bold-faced names such as Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie and Jon Bernthal.

Other names on the manifest include Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Samantha Morton, Benny Safdie and Cosmo Jarvis, among others.

The film is being described by Universal as a “mythic action epic shot across the world across the world using brand new Imax film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to Imax film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”

Homer’s poem tells of the Greek hero King Odysseus, being played by Damon in Nolan’s telling, and his tortuous, 10-year journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. It is a journey filled with interruptions and influence from the gods (not to mention a few Cyclopes). The story also involves Odysseus’ wife and grown son, who must contend with aggressive suitors that have designs on the throne.

Acting since the 1990s, Hurst has appeared in films such as Remember the Titans and We Were Soldiers and numerous shows including Bates Motel. However, it’s his role of burly and loyal Opie Winston on the celebrated Sons of Anarchy that earned him plenty of recognition.

Hurst recently starred in the Disney+ television series Mysterious Benedict Society, based on Trenton Lee Stewart’s bestselling books and will be next seen on the upcoming Netflix series The Abandons, opposite Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson.

Hurst is repped by UTA and Piper Kaniecki Marks.
