Liverpool Make Big Arne Slot Sack Decision After Burnley Draw
Things went from bad to worse for Arne Slot and Liverpool on Saturday as they dropped two valuable points with a 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Burnley. The pressure continues to mount on the Dutch tactician and an update regarding his future has emerged.
Retaining their spot inside the top four with a point on home soil, it was big-money summer addition Florian Wirtz who opened the scoring just before the half-time interval with the German’s strike making up for Dominik Szoboszlai’s missed penalty.
Marcus Edwards struck back in the 65th minute and Liverpool were unable to find an answer in the dying embers of the match, thus finishing the encounter with a goal apiece. Now, after 22 matches of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, they have won just ten.

Slot’s position at Anfield, as Jurgen Klopp‘s worthy successor, was not at risk heading into the season. With four matches spare, the 2024/25 Premier League title was won at a canter and the likes of Alexander Isak, Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike were added to the squad in an expensive summer overhaul of the squad.
Things haven’t gone swimmingly since, though, with Mohamed Salah no longer firing on all cylinders and many of their summer recruits struggling to get up to speed at Anfield.
The season started well and Liverpool won their first five Premier League matches, prompting supporters to assume another title win was inevitable – but things began to slip and draws and/or defeats have become too commonplace.
Time To Go: Liverpool Must Sack Slot ASAP and Appoint ‘Best Coach in the World’
Liverpool boss Arne Slot has come under more intense heat after a draw against beleaguered Burnley at Anfield
But what does that mean for the future of Slot? A report from The Athletic suggests the ex-Feyenoord custodian retains the backing of owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG), who have no desire to follow in the footsteps of Chelsea and Manchester United.
There is, however, a concern over the fact that much of the fanbase are beginning to lose faith in the post-Klopp project, of which Slot is the mastermind behind.
He needs to find momentum, the report states, and he could do so in the coming weeks with fixtures against Marseille, Bournemouth, Qarabag and Newcastle United on the horizon. Facing Manchester City at home, on February 8, could be a chance to prove what they are capable of.
Xabi Alonso being relieved of his duties by Real Madrid higher-ups adds another complexity to the situation. The Spaniard was high on Liverpool’s shortlist of Klopp replacements in the summer of 2024, but he committed another year of his managerial career to former club Bayer Leverkusen and Slot swiftly emerged as the front-runner.
Widely regarded as one of the best managers in world football, Alonso has a strong relationship with Liverpool thanks to his spell as the club’s deep-lying midfielder between 2004 and 2009, and The Athletic report it is currently unclear whether he’d be looking to ’embark on a new challenge’.
Champions League Qualification is Imperative for Slot’s Job Security
It’s no surprise to see Slot losing the support of the moderates. “The tide has well and truly turned on Arne Slot – not sacking him now is just delaying the inevitable, there’s no coming back for him now that he’s lost the fans,” one fan said in response to their recent draw with the Clarets. Another added: “Arne Slot really denied us of an easy back-to-back Premier League titles.”
The noise, behind the scenes and inside a raucous Anfield, will only continue to crank up if an upturn in performances and results are not seen in the coming weeks.
As things stand, Liverpool – who have won just two Premier League titles (in 2019/20 and 2024/25) – are inside the top four but Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Manchester City means they are now only one point off their arch-rivals, while Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea are just two points adrift.

Between now and the end of the season, Slot needs to place heavy importance on winning football matches, whichever way possible. It would be a significant fall-off following Slot becoming just the fifth manager to win the title in their maiden season, but securing Champions League qualification is the minimum requirement, especially given they added £400 million worth of players over the summer.
