What Happened in Markets Today

Stocks melted down after President Trump threatened European allies with tariffs over his desire for the U.S. to acquire Greenland. The Dow Jones Industrials Average fell 870 points, or 1.8%. The S&P 500 declined 2.1% while the Nasdaq ended down 2.4%. Bonds also sold off; the 10-year Treasury yield rose 0.064 percentage point to 4.294%.

The dollar declined and precious metals rallied. The WSJ dollar index fell 0.25%. Gold futures gained 3.73% to $4759.60 per ounce, a new record high and the biggest one-day percentage gain since the Liberation Day tariff scare in April of last year. Silver jumped 6.9%.
