Prince William and Kate Middleton have been returning to royal duties this month with the pair heading north to Scotland where they undergo one change once they cross the border

Since the turn of the new year, Prince William and Princess Kate have resumed their busy array of royal duties and journeys. This has included, amongst other things, a trip to Scotland that featured the pair experiencing a bit of curling in Stirling.

However, whilst these trips have followed a pattern of the duo highlighting causes and learning about the new innovations and latest problems in the UK, one thing is slightly different when they head to Scotland.

Said difference is that they are referred to by different names, a tradition which dates back over half a millennia.

Explaining the titular change that occurs when William and Kate cross the border on the Mail’s Palace Confidential, Richard Kay said: “North of the England border they’re known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.

“It’s a title which dates back to when Scotland was an entirely separate kingdom before the union with England. The title descends from that given to. I think one of the first kings of Scotland gave to his eldest son and its descended ever since the early 14th Century.”

Meanwhile, William and Kate are currently being faced with a changing Britain facing several difficulties.

One cause close to home for the couple is the plight of the British pub, which has been under threat due to the rising cost of living for both the public and pub owners.

Whilst in Scotland, William, 43, addressed the situation of one pub in Stirling where he did the curling.

The Telegraph reported that he said: “I want to help pubs. This is the best place to come and get to know each other. I grew up in pubs. I absolutely love pubs.

“It’s crucial. It’s the human-to-human contact, isn’t it, rather than just being on the phone or watching TV.”

It wasn’t just William who had an informal moment on the pair’s Scottish visit, during a brief moment when they greeted fans for selfies, Kate spotted a fan who looked slightly sad not to have had an interaction with the pair.

Noticing this, the Mirror reported that Kate went around her security and protection officers to have a chat and accept a bouquet of flowers from them.

Commenting about the incident on X, one user said that it was a “beautiful reminder of how deeply she truly cares about people”. Another added that “that is why the people love them so much”.
