A Newcastle engineering consultancy marking 50 years in business has toasted rising revenues and profits as it seeks out new future opportunities around the world.

Cundall has more than 1,200 staff in 29 offices around the world including eight in the UK and international bases in Hong Kong, Adelaide, Dubai, Singapore and Sydney. The Tyneside-founded firm has been involved in landmark projects including facilities for the 2012 London Olympics and the retrofitting of the famous Palm House at Kew Gardens in London, as well as local schemes including Eldon Square, Pilgrim’s Quarter and the Theatre Royal.

As it marks its half-century, the company has published accounts for the year ended June 30 2025, showing turnover lifted from £105.56m to £112.9m, while operating profits rose from £12.44m to £13m. The year also saw 100 new employees join the business, with the average number of employees rising from 1,172 to 1,272.

Profit for the financial year available for discretionary division among members was £10.9m, down from £11.5m. Within the accounts, the board of directors said it performed well against a challenging backdrop.

It said: “With the challenging global economic turmoil and inflationary pressures in most locations, Cundall continued to perform strongly. This is testament to our staff and our clients who continue to appreciate what Cundall can do as trusted advisors across many market sectors. This has enabled us to further build our capabilities and expand our skills offering to clients and communities.”

It added that, post year end, it has planned for “increased activity levels in most of our global business, with corresponding and continued increases in employee numbers across the globe”. It said further expansion into new global locations is being explored in the new financial year.

Last October the company officially launched its new headquarters at Bank House. The design and engineering multinational moved its 150-strong Tyneside workforce into the 10th floor of the building which it helped to design, from its former base at Regent Centre in Gosforth.

Tomás Neeson, chairman at Cundall, said: “We are pleased with our results for the 2024-2025 financial year, which reflect our ongoing commitment to creating as many opportunities as possible for engineers to deliver a low-carbon future for the built environment. We continue to grow globally, expanding the number of countries in which we operate and enabling more talented people to build careers at Cundall.

“As we enter our 50th year, we are we’re not just celebrating a legacy, we are building on it, looking ahead to a future where our role in engineering is evolving rapidly with the uptake of AI and emerging technologies. Closer to home, the recent opening of our new headquarters in Newcastle’s Bank House signifies our long-standing commitment to the North East. Our whole team are delighted to be based in a building we have helped create.

“Our new home in the city centre overlooks much of the city that we are so proud to have helped shape over the last five decades, including all the Pilgrim Street regeneration projects, which attracted over half a billion pounds in investment and engaged all of our engineering disciplines.

“Looking to the future, we see opportunities across a wide range of sectors and locations. Our global data centre sector continues to go from strength to strength, and we’re proud to be delivering locally in Cambois for QTS, the largest data centre deployment in the North East. Our trajectory remains strong despite economic uncertainty since the end of the last financial year.”
