A woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect following the death of Steve Bruce’s four-month-old grandson Madison Smith.

The infant was discovered unresponsive at his home in Bowdon, Greater Manchester, where he lived with Bruce’s daughter Amy, 37, and her husband Matt Smith, 35.

The woman, believed to be a night nanny hired by the family to help care for Madison, has been questioned by police and released on bail pending further investigations.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they are examining the woman’s phone as part of their ongoing inquiry into the infant’s death on October 18.

A North West Ambulance spokesperson said: “We attended a private address in Bowdon, on 18th October 2024 following a 999 call at 07:07.”

The emergency response included two ambulances, a response vehicle, and an advanced paramedic.

Police are examining the woman’s phone as part of their investigation, with reports suggesting she may have spent time on social media before Madison was found.

The couple had hired the night nanny to assist with Madison’s care, The Sun reported.

“Matt woke and the first thing he did was to go and check on Madison and he was horrified to find he wasn’t breathing,” a source told The Sun.

“It’s a very delicate situation but officers felt concerned enough that they arrested the nanny and they have interviewed her to get her account,” the source added.

“It’s been the worst time of my family’s entire lives and is something no family should have to endure.”

“I’d like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the family to thank everyone for the tributes and messages from inside and outside the footballing world,” he added.
