Following the tragic death of Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek, his grief-stricken family have paid tribute to the beloved husband and father-of-six on what would have been his 49th birthday
James Van Der Beek‘s widow Kimberly Brook shared more than 70 posts on Instagram Stories in tribute to her late husband on his 49th birthday. The Dawson’s Creek star died on February 11 aged just 48, after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer two years ago.
Kimberly, 43, shared her six children with her late husband, Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, nine, Gwendolyn, seven, and Jeremiah, four. She posted dozens of photos and videos of happy memories together, in which the story of their time together shows him with their children as babies, dancing and having fun, the whole family beaming with joy.

The grief-stricken mother-of-six wrote: “The way you were at births, held our newborns, revered me… I will cherish forever.” The family lived a peaceful life together on a 36-acre ranch in Texas, having quit Los Angeles in 2020.
She wrote on one of the posts: “You are the light of our lives. You love, beauty, presence, tenderness, protection, safety, creativity and singing.”

Another caption saw the whole family stood together in front of a row of Christmas trees, with Brook writing: “Baby, you were the best humanity had to offer. This is a loss I don’t know how to process. I will love you forever.”
Kimberly also posted a video in which her and James’ daughter Emilia talks about how she keeps her dad’s memory alive. The nine-year-old spoke with wisdom as she described how she has been dealing with her dad’s death.
She says she speaks to him every day, lets her emotions out and cries if she misses him, saying she tells him about her feelings. The moving video sees Emilia say that although she can’t hear her dad, she knows he can hear her.
Proud mum Kimberly explained the context behind the video, writing: “Emilia asked me if she could make a video to post today, walked outside and came back with this. In my stories are a whole lot of photos and some videos.
“All I want to do is watch videos of him right now with the kids. Thank you for the tremendous heart, love and support for the family.. James… We will celebrate March 8th every day for the rest of our lives.”
The family announced James’ death on February 11, sharing a photo of the beloved dad and husband on Instagram. Kimberly wrote: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time.
“Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
His death came just weeks after James shared a thoughtful New Year‘s resolution message. He said at the time: “Why are we celebrating a New Year in the dead of winter? The time to celebrate a new beginning, and a new you, and a new resolution, is the spring.”
A source told the Mail that, despite his public optimism, James realised time was running out. The insider said: “James was on hospice for several weeks and he was rail thin when he passed. He was mostly in bed because he was very weak, and he was not eating.”
They added it had become increasingly hard to watch the actor’s deterioration. “He was in hospice, they held his hand and were there for him, of course,” they said.
“But it has been hard because James was so ill, he was weak, He had so much charisma, he was a wonderful soul, and his presence is missed. Those poor little kids.”
