A huge fire broke out in Forsyth House on Union Street in Glasgow city centre this afternoon.
An iconic building in Glasgow city centre has collapsed after a huge fire erupted this afternoon. Emergency services were called to Forsyth House on Union Street shortly before 3pm on Sunday, March 8.
Police have closed off swathes of the city centre as the fire engulfed the building which has now partially collapsed. The building’s iconic dome has collapsed as the fire has spread onto Gordon Street and close to the main entrance to Glasgow Central Station.
A total of 15 fire appliances and specialist resources have been sent to the scene by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service as more than 60 fire fighters struggled to bring the fire under control.
Glasgow Central Station has been closed for a number of hours with all trains to and from the station cancelled. Network Rail have confirmed that the station will be closed tomorrow morning, Monday, March 9.
Forsyth House sits next to Central Station and it is currently unknown if any damage has been done to the station as a result of the fire.
Businesses including Sexy Coffee, Subway, Paddy Power and Blue Lagoon occupy units on the ground floor of the building which has been mostly destroyed.
First Minister John Swinney has said he is “deeply concerned” about the fire and said he was “very grateful to all of the emergency services who are responding”.
The fire is understood to have started in a shop on Union Street shortly before 4pm before spreading to the rest of the building.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters continue to work to extinguish a large building fire on Union Street, Glasgow.
“At its height, 15 fire appliances and specialist resources including three high-reach vehicles and a water rescue team were mobilised to the area.
“We were first alerted at 3.46pm on Sunday, March 8, to reports of a fire affecting the ground floor of a four-storey commercial building.
“There are no reported casualties, and crews remain at the scene.”
A spokesperson for Network Rail said: ”Due to a fire on Union Street, train services from Glasgow Central Station are suspended. The station will remain closed tomorrow morning. If you are expecting to travel tonight or first thing tomorrow, please check with your train operator first.”
A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: “Broomielaw is currently closed from Oswald Street to Jamaica Street and Clyde Street is closed westbound from Stockwell Street to Jamaica Street and eastbound from Jamaica Street to Maxwell Street.
“This is to assist the Fire Service in obtaining a water source from the River Clyde to help them deal with the ongoing building fire in Union Street.”
