Masdar targets 1GW 24/7 clean power project in Uzbekistan
Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) has signed a collaboration agreement with Emirates Utilities Development Company (EUDC) and the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan to explore the development of a gigascale, round-the-clock renewable energy project in Uzbekistan with a baseload capacity of up to 1 gigawatt.
The proposed project would combine large-scale solar generation with battery energy storage to provide continuous clean power, supporting Uzbekistan’s energy transition and long-term electricity needs. If developed, it would add to Masdar’s existing renewable energy portfolio in the country, which totals around 2GW of capacity and represents investments exceeding $2 billion.
Project strengthens energy security
Documents relating to the agreement were exchanged during a ceremony at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026, attended by senior officials from the UAE and Uzbekistan. Under the proposed structure, Uzbekistan’s state-owned energy trading company JSC Uzenergosotish would act as the offtaker for the project.
Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said: “This collaboration underscores the UAE’s commitment to advancing the global energy transition through strategic partnerships and innovative, large-scale solutions. Projects of this scale show how clean energy can deliver reliable, round-the-clock power while supporting economic growth and energy security.”
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, said the project builds on the company’s experience in delivering large-scale renewable energy integrated with storage. “With our groundbreaking round-the-clock projects, Masdar is overcoming the challenge of intermittency and reimagining the potential of renewable energy for the information age,” he said.
“By leveraging our 20 years of experience in renewables and our expertise in battery storage, we can provide reliable, sustainable power at scale.”
Yousif Ahmed Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Water & Electricity and Chairman of EUDC, said the collaboration reflected a shared focus on dependable clean energy. “Together with Masdar and Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy, we will explore a gigascale project that supports Uzbekistan’s clean energy ambitions and demonstrates how strong partnerships can help scale reliable renewables,” he said.
New projects strengthen renewable leadership
The announcement follows Masdar’s launch last year of the world’s first gigascale solar and battery storage project. In Uzbekistan, the company most recently signed an agreement in November 2025 to develop the country’s largest standalone battery energy storage system, a 300MW / 600MWh project in the Navoi region.
Masdar is also advancing a 5.2GW solar photovoltaic plant integrated with a 19GWh battery energy storage system in Abu Dhabi in partnership with Emirates Water and Electricity Company, alongside similar 24/7 renewable energy initiatives in other markets, including Kazakhstan.
Central Asia remains a strategic growth region for Masdar as it works towards a global renewable energy portfolio capacity target of 100GW by 2030, with gigascale projects designed to deliver reliable, continuous clean power at scale.
