Romero salvages a point for Spurs
The result will likely do little to ease the pressure on the Spurs boss.
Cristian Romero scored a 90th-minute equaliser to rescue a point for Tottenham as they drew 2-2 at Burnley, a result that will do little to ease the pressure on Thomas Frank.
The Champions League provided some respite to the under-fire Frank in midweek as Spurs cruised past Borussia Dortmund.
Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke expressed his hope that the defeat of Dortmund would serve as a turning point in Spurs’ season. However, that hope appeared set to be in vain after Burnley came from behind to lead 2-1 late on.
Micky van de Ven slammed Tottenham ahead in the 38th minute, only for Axel Tuanzebe to level on the stroke of half-time.
Lyle Foster completed the turnaround when his effort on the rebound squirmed over the line in the 76th minute.
Yet there was a twist in the tale that prevented Burnley from ending their 13-game Premier League winless run, captain Romero heading home brilliantly from Wilson Odobert’s cross to salvage a share of the spoils.
While Frank was spared the humiliation of a defeat that might have cost him his job, the scrutiny on him will likely intensify in the wake of another disappointing Premier League result. The gap between Tottenham and the relegation zone is eight points, with the same margin separating Spurs from the top four and a place in next season’s Champions League.
Tuanzebe levels after Van de Ven opener
There was little goal mouth action in the first half until Odobert drew a fine save from Martin Dubravka in the 36th minute.
Dubravka was then required to produce a double save to deny Odobert and Conor Gallagher, but there was nothing the Slovak could do to prevent Van de Ven from hammering home from the opener.
Odobert then spurned a clear chance to make it 2-0, firing straight at Dubravka from 12 yards after being played in by Xavi Simons. Spurs paid the price for his profligacy when Tuanzebe volleyed home Kyle Walker’s excellent delivery to the back post.
Romero rescues Tottenham
Burnley were grateful to Dubravka again as he produced another fine stop to keep out a Solanke header, but the hosts were the better team thereafter.
Guglielmo Vicario superbly robbed Armando Broja of the ball as he surged into the box following a Burnley break, but the Clarets’ improved performance in the second half was rewarded.
Vicario repelled Foster’s initial effort after neat link-up play with Jaidon Anthony, but he got enough on the rebound for the ball to squirm over the line and second Turf Moor into raptures.
Tottenham responded well, with Dubravka making a flying save to thwart Mathys Tel and Simons rattling the crossbar, and Burnley ultimately could not hold on as Romero earned a point and perhaps extended his manager’s tenure.
