I've let my daughter vape since she was TWELVE - she always craves next hit & can’t even walk without losing her breath

A MUM said she felt powerless to stop her 12-year-old child from vaping – even when she started suffering painful withdrawals.

Nicky Bowman’s daughter Holly was getting through one 20ml disposable vape a day – which has the highest nicotine content.

It is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes and she quickly became addicted, spending £50 on average a week.

Mum-of-three Nicky, 53, from Reading, Berkshire, realised her daughter was doing something she shouldn’t when she began lying to her about needing money for bus fares, and saw large sums going out of her Revolut Junior account.

When she found out she was vaping, she was dismayed but eventually knew it was something Holly – now 17 – needed to stop on her own.

Nicky told the Sun: “I’ve been worried about it for years now, but the thing is with teenagers you can give them as hard a time as you like but they will find a way to do it anyway.

“I have berated her and restricted her access to money but they find a way.”

Holly is currently working towards quitting and has reduced her intake to 3ml alongside her boyfriend after failing multiple times to go cold turkey.

The teenager had started on cigarettes but didn’t really enjoy smoking.

Explaining her attraction to vapes, she said: “It was mostly the influence of social media, it was very romanticised and I suppose they put this idea in your head that it’s cool.

“I did know that it was addictive. Of course, I underestimated it. It’s not going to happen to me [I thought].

“I was more and more aware that I was getting addicted but by that point it had gone too far.”

She said her cravings became unbearable, while her chest would become tight and only relax when she was vaping.

“I get headaches and I’m very irritable when I’m not doing it as well,” she added.

“I first tried cigarettes and I didn’t really enjoy them. With vapes they are much easier to like for young people, they’ve got these bright colours and flavours like gummy bears, they’re very much advertised towards kids so I think they were more appealing to me.

“Not only were they addictive but they tasted nice, that’s so enticing for young people.”

Even after her mum discovered her habit, Holly said “I didn’t feel shame because it was normalised in my environment”.

“I guess I thought she doesn’t understand, I wouldn’t listen to her. Over time I felt this shame to be addicted to them.

“Currently, I am in the process of quitting properly. I’ve tried to do cold turkey many times and never succeeded…the cravings were unbearable.”

She’s already noticing the benefits of cutting her intake, and can now comfortably exercise and doesn’t get out of breath just going up the stairs.

Holly began thinking about quitting two years ago, having become fed up with having no money and feeling sick.

“They are about £7 each. It was about £50 a week,” she explained. “It was more than my pocket money. As much money as I could find I was spending all of it on vapes.”

If she was out with friends, she couldn’t buy food and could no longer afford video games or music.

“And I was nauseous all the time,” she said. “I heard of a lot of people getting nic-sick too, that was a big one for me.

“I felt nasty, I felt unwell. That was a big reason for me.”

DANGERS OF VAPING FOR CHILDREN

The NHS advises against under-18s from vaping due to the impact it can have on a child’s development.

According to its website, it says: “Vaping is not for children and young people.

“Their developing lungs and brains mean they are more sensitive to its effects.

“Nicotine vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking, but it is not risk-free.”

It adds that it is illegal to sell nicotine vaping products to anyone under 18, or for adults to buy them for children.

You can report a retailer selling nicotine vapes or tobacco products to under-18s to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice portal here.

Holly’s school is “very much against” pupils vaping, and have tried to “add in as many ways to stop us as they can”, she explained.

This includes keeping the toilet doors open, but “there’s always a way”, Holly said.

“The thing is, young people find their way around everything. People just go in the stalls, blow it into sinks.

“The corner of the stairwell where the cameras don’t pick up on it. Anywhere we can get away with it.

“There were points in my addiction when I was leaving class frequently to go and vape.”

And due to the appealing odours vapes give off which don’t cling to clothes like cigarette smoke, Holly said it wasn’t difficult to mask what she was doing for a while.

Nicky said: “Parents want to believe their child is different. The number of parents I speak to who say my child doesn’t vape, and I know for a fact they do. They are in denial.”

She continued: “Anybody with teenagers is lying if they think they can force them into things. I’m delighted she’s made this choice herself.”

The family moved to County Meath, Ireland, in 2015. The Irish government is set to ban disposable vapes.

Earlier this month, cabinet approval was given to draft laws tabled by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly.

Under the proposed laws there will be a complete ban on the sale, manufacture or import of single-use or disposable vapes in Ireland.

While Nicky sees this as a positive move, she said many children will find a way around it, including buying e-liquid and non-disposable devices, despite them being more expensive.

It has also never been legal to sell disposable vapes to children as young as Holly was when she started, though she still bought them without an issue.

“The shopkeepers are very lenient,” Nicky said. “They wouldn’t dream of selling a 12-year-old cigarettes but are quite happy to sell them a vape.”

She also admits that her daughter is mirroring her own journey as a youth in regards to smoking.

She said: “I smoked cigarettes when I was 14 or 15 years old for the same reasons. I quit when I was 17, I didn’t really like it. I think for a lot of people that’s really common.”

She added: “Holly is committed to quitting, hopefully she’ll soon get down to zero nicotine or stop altogether.”

New research from Zurich reveals that 14% of kids are vaping and half of them are under 11, and two fifths of these have bought them at school.

Of those children who do vape, 13% of parents believe they do so on a daily basis.

Super healthy mum, 39, is riddled with incurable tumours after doctors dismissed a lump in her leg for 2 years

A FIT and healthy mum who did all the right things to prevent cancer was shocked to hear she had been living with the disease for at least a year.

Natasha McGlinchey, 41, from Norfolk, has since been told her cancer is incurable.

She has seven inoperable tumours, four of which are in her heart.

The mum-of-two, aged eight and 10, says she first saw her GP about a lump on her leg in September 2019, more than a year before her diagnosis.

At multiple A&E visits, once more symptoms occurred, she claims she was told the lump must be a symptom of long Covid – despite there being no evidence she’d been infected – or because she was a runner.

But when her lump was discovered to be a tumour with an MRI scan, she was told she had sarcoma cancer over the phone.

“I just thought, ‘That’s ridiculous’,” Natasha recalls. “‘I can’t have cancer. I’m fit and healthy. I’m not even 40’.

“It’s so frustrating because I have this huge amount of guilt that if I had nipped it in the bud straight away, I would be in a much better position than I am right now.”

Natasha was super sporty – she did yoga, took part in triathlons and ran daily.

“I couldn’t have had a healthier diet, a healthier lifestyle,” Natasha, a PE teacher, says.

“I had stress in my life, but I also did what you would consider all the right things to not get cancer.

“There was never any chilling in front of the telly – we were always on the go.

“I ate a super healthy diet. It was in the back of my mind that if I did all these things, I was going to be lifelong healthy.”

Concerning lump

In 2019, during a sports massage, a therapist pointed out a lump in Natasha’s leg and advised her to see a doctor.

“I went to the GP, who refused to even touch my leg,” Natasha remembers.

“He just said runners get weird lumps and that it was completely normal.

“He said it would probably be a fatty deposit and that it would go away.

“He was one of the senior GPs at my practice, so I thought it was fine.

“He didn’t ask if I had any other symptoms. He didn’t talk about a scan. So off I went.”

The NHS says lumps and swellings are very common and they “do not definitely mean you have soft tissue sarcoma, but it’s important to get checked by a GP”.

A lump – usually deep under the skin, solid, painless and hard – is the most common symptom of soft tissue sarcoma.

Medics in A&E were very dismissive. There was no talk of a scan

Natasha

Natasha’s lump got bigger and bigger, affecting her movement, but she continued to be active during the Covid-19 lockdowns of 2020.

However, when Natasha’s school reopened in September 2020, her colleagues were shocked to see the size of her leg.

“From the back of my knee to the bottom of my bum, was a massive solid tumour,” Natasha explains. “But obviously at the time we didn’t know what it was.”

Natasha began to feel exhausted and breathless, unable to complete her usual tasks at her job.

Her GP said it may be a blood clot, and advised her to go to A&E, where Natasha was refused entry because it was the peak of a Covid wave.

The second time she went, when she was allowed in, the doctors diagnosed her with long Covid, and said she had fatty deposits.

“They were very dismissive,” Natasha adds. “Again, there was no talk of a scan.

“I’d actually done an antibody test which proved that I didn’t have Covid. I had never had Covid.

“We were feeling really frustrated because I just couldn’t get better no matter how much sleep I had or how much good food I was eating.”

Going back to her GP again, Natasha spoke to a locum, who finally sent her for an MRI.

“I got a phone call from my GP saying, ‘the MRI has come back and you have sarcoma’,” Natasha remembers.

“I didn’t know what that was because I’d never heard of it.

“So I said, ‘Okay, fine, what do we do and when can I return to work?’

“He said, ‘It’s not as simple as that – it’s a form of cancer’.”

Sarcoma is an aggressive and rare type of cancer that typically begins in the bones or soft tissue.

Sarcoma accounts for about one per cent of all cancer diagnoses, and Natasha suffers from metastatic myxoid liposarcoma, of which there are only 72 cases a year.

It was stressful and really upsetting because I didn’t want to be retired at 39 years old

Natasha

Two days before Christmas in 2020, Natasha found out the sarcoma had spread.

It was now in her heart and her chest wall and she started chemotherapy within a week.

Natasha says: “I lost all my hair and couldn’t get out of bed.

“My husband had to take me to the toilet and had to help me wash. It was just horrendous.”

What is metastatic myxoid liposarcoma?

Myxoid liposarcoma is a type of liposarcoma that is most frequently found in the limbs (and in particular, the thighs).

There are an average of 72 cases of myxoid liposarcoma diagnosed every year in England.

Although myxoid liposarcoma can affect anyone of any age, the median age at diagnosis is 46 years old.

The doctors told Natasha that the treatment was not working and that the tumours were not shrinking, so she began five weeks of radiotherapy.

“My consultant said, ‘You’re not going back to work: you need to take ill health retirement because you will need more treatment’,” Natasha explains.

“’There will be more tumours, you can’t commit to a job. You can’t be a PE teacher anymore because your body can’t cope’.

“That was stressful and really upsetting because I didn’t want to be retired at 39 years old.”

‘Incurable’

Natasha has unfortunately since discovered more tumours on top of those in her heart and chest wall, including near her liver.

She has had to face the reality that her disease is not curable and have palliative chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which leaves her feeling extremely poorly.

As well as the physical burden, she struggles emotionally with her diagnosis and the toll on her children.

“Having children gets me through, gives me hope, gives me a will to get up and do these things,” Natasha says.

“But it’s also so tricky. How much do you tell them? How much do you involve them?”

Natasha wishes she had pushed her doctor to take her lump more seriously, adding that many GPs are unaware of sarcoma, especially in areas where there are no sarcoma specialists.

“GPs don’t know what sarcoma is,” she says.

“My advice is if you have a lump anywhere, go to your GP and don’t let it go – you need to have it scanned.

“I left it way too long. I’m a bit of a people pleaser. I don’t like to push. I don’t like to make waves.

“Don’t let things go. Really push. It’s not being rude to your GP.

“You always think, ‘There’s someone worse off than me, there’s someone that needs that doctor appointment more than me’. No, they don’t.

“As women, we’re ready for breast cancer. We all check our breasts, and we go for smear tests, and we’re conscious that if you find a lump in your breast, you go to the doctor and it will be taken seriously.

“But if you have a lump in a limb, it seems like it won’t be cancer because you don’t think about that sort of cancer.”

The symptoms of sarcoma cancer

The most common symptom of soft tissue sarcoma is a lump somewhere on the body.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean cancer – there are all sorts of reasons for lumps and swellings, but it must always be checked by a GP.

The lump is usually found deep under the skin and might be felt before it can be seen.

The lump is usually solid to the touch, painless and hard to move around under the skin.

It will continue to grow and as it does, it can become painful.

Other symptoms depend on where in the body the lump is.

These can include:

  • Tummy pain and constipation if there is a sarcoma near the tummy
  • A cough that does not go away if there is a sarcoma near the lungs

IRON Series 30 Min Glute Workout – Dumbbell Lower Body | 3

IRON Series 30 Min Glute Workout - Dumbbell Lower Body | 3

The glutes stabilise our hips and pelvis and are required to provide the correct alignment to the pelvis. Even balancing on one leg… and running which is always alternating single leg movements.

Providing support to the lower back, reducing knee and lower back pain plus the many benefits to training overall promote longevity in day to day activities and training.

Strengthening your glutes will have a lasting impact on reducing risk of injury whether you are running, walking or lifting.

In this 30 minute workout we will isolate, activate and engage the glute muscles focusing on hip extension and abduction.

For this workout, you will need some dumbbells, a barbell or even a kettlebell!

Aside from the weight, you will need a mat and a glute band.

I will also be using a small sofa that is quite rigid for hip thrusts and Bulgarian lunges. If you prefer, you can perform bridges on the mat and regular lunges with a forward leaning tilt!

The dumbbells I am using for your reference are 1 x 30kg primarily and 1x 15kg for the Bulgarian lunges!

The timer will be on for 60 seconds per exercise with 30 seconds rest inbetween!

You will notice I am less focused on just lifting the weight.. I am thinking constantly about how I am contracting my glutes in order to move.

The glute band should be utilised as best as you can… there is a lot of resistance so use it! At the top… bottom.. and during lifting and lowering! Constant tension when hip thrusting to get the most out of each rep!

Glutes definitely were isolated, activated and engaged throughout!

👊🏼🤩
