79% of travellers risk data theft through unsafe charging ports, UAE Cyber Security Council warns

The UAE Cyber Security Council has warned that nearly eight in ten travellers unknowingly expose their personal data to theft when using untrusted public charging ports, highlighting the growing threat of “juice jacking” attacks that exploit unsecured connections.

According to the Council, some public charging stations may contain malicious software capable of accessing data or installing harmful programmes on connected devices through automatically activated media transfer protocols.

The Council said that ignoring basic precautions, such as using personal chargers or blocking data transfer, can lead to password theft, data compromise, and spyware installation without users’ awareness.

The Council also revealed that 68 per cent of companies have experienced attacks originating from unsafe charging points, resulting in data breaches and disruptions to corporate digital systems.

Warning signs that a device may have been targeted include rapid battery drain, slower app performance, repeated system crashes, and unfamiliar messages or symbols appearing on screen.

To reduce risks, the Council advised travellers to carry their own chargers, avoid using public charging stations, and reject any data-transfer requests when connecting devices to unknown power sources. It also recommended enabling two-factor authentication, using biometric logins, and reviewing app permissions to prevent unnecessary access to sensitive data such as photos, messages, and contacts.

The Council cautioned that even legitimate-looking mobile applications may contain malicious code, potentially allowing attackers to spy on users or steal financial information.

The awareness message is part of the Council’s Cyber Pulse initiative, a weekly campaign to promote safe digital practices and educate the public on emerging cyber threats. The programme forms part of the UAE’s broader effort to strengthen national cybersecurity resilience, build trust in the digital economy, and protect users’ privacy amid rapid technological transformation.
