Abu Dhabi Police warn drivers of AED1,000 fine for unsafe bicycle trailer transport
Abu Dhabi Police have urged drivers to comply with safety regulations when transporting bicycles in trailers, warning that violations could result in fines of up to AED1,000.
The Traffic and Security Patrols Directorate issued the warning as part of its “Our Winter is Safe and Enjoyable” campaign, emphasising the need for strict adherence to trailer safety requirements.
Under the regulations, drivers must affix a third licence plate to the rear of the trailer and equip it with lights and warning signals. Hazard lights must be activated on both the vehicle and trailer, and the trailer must display warning and reflective stickers. Drivers are also required to remain in the right lane at all times to ensure safety.
The trailer’s width must not exceed 260cm and its length must not exceed that of the towing vehicle.
Article 96 of the Federal Traffic Law, which relates to towing a vehicle, boat or cart in an unsafe or insecure manner, carries a penalty of AED1,000. The absence of lights at the rear or sides of the trailer constitutes an offence under Article 97, punishable by a AED500 fine.
A further penalty of AED400 applies under Article 27(B) for acts that may obscure the licence plate numbers of a vehicle.
The directorate stressed its commitment to intensifying traffic control and taking legal action against any vehicle that fails to comply with trailer safety laws.
