Sunday, December 28, is expected to be the busiest day
Hundreds of thousands of passengers are expected to travel through Bristol Airport over the festive season, according to the South West transport hub.
Around 430,000 people will use the airport during the Christmas period, with more than 12,000 passengers arriving from destinations including Barcelona and Berlin yesterday (Sunday, December 21).
The airport is operating 14 flights on Christmas Day with eight in total arriving and departing for Amsterdam; one inbound and outbound Pegasus flight for Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen; as well as flights to and from Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
Sunday, December 28, will be the busiest day, Bristol Airport said, with nearly 32,000 customers arriving and departing through the terminal.
Scott Deacon-Church, head of terminal operations at Bristol Airport, said: “This year Bristol Airport will reunite thousands of families and friends for Christmas. Many are choosing to fly into their local Airport to reconnect, rather than into other airports and travel back to the South West.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone home as well as helping others escape for some festive fun whether that be in the sun, a winter wonderland or hitting the slopes. We wish all of our customers a very Merry Christmas.”
According to Bristol Airport, the top hot spots for winter sun this year are Alicante, Tenerife, Malaga, Lanzarote and Faro. Meanwhile, the most popular wintry destinations are Geneva in Switzerland, Innsbruck in Austria, Toulouse in France, Turin in Italy and Sofia in Bulgaria.
It comes as Bristol Airport prepares to replace its bus fleet with all-electric vehicles. The 21 new electric buses will be brought into use in the new year, transforming the A1 and A3 Airport Flyer services operated by First Bus. The investment is part of a commitment to reach net-zero operations by 2030, the airport said.
In September, the airport announced it had recorded its “busiest month ever” as demand for flights post-pandemic continues to surge.
The South West transport hub is currently carrying out a comprehensive £60m transformation of its terminal and departure lounge, in a bid to enhance the experience for the millions of passengers who travel through the airport as part of its wider expansion plans.
