The DVLA and Post Office have provided a fresh update to drivers across the UK which could have a huge impact on drivers looking to renew their car tax or licences.
Towards the end of 2023, there had been fears that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and Post Office Ltd would not be able to agree to a new contract, in what would have been a hammer blow to motorists.
Many drivers around the UK continue to use the Post Office to renew their car tax and their driving licence, as well as apply for a provisional licence as they may not be able to use the DVLA website.
However, it has been announced that a new deal had been agreed between the DVLA and Post Office following a “period of reviewing the role of front office counter services”.

The DVLA and Post Office Ltd have agreed to a further one-year extension of counter services

The new contract began on April 1, 2024, and would last for one year, with an option for a potential further two extensions, each lasting one year.
Although some drivers were concerned that a similar situation would arise where the contract would not be extended, the DVLA and Post Office have confirmed a one-year extension.
Both parties have extended their contract using the first of two additional years, meaning the partnership will remain in place until March 31, 2026.
In a letter sent to Postmasters seen by GB News, the Post Office said it was “delighted to share” that it had agreed a further one-year extension with the DVLA.
As part of this, Post Office branches will continue to offer services including vehicle tax and driving licence renewal. Motorists will also be able to apply for a provisional driving licence.
With the new extension between Post Office Ltd and the DVLA, tax and licence products will continue to be sold until at least March 31, 2026.
The Post Office also confirmed to Postmasters that there are no changes proposed to services or locations which offer these services.
Before the March 2026 deadline, the DVLA and Post Office can agree to a further one-year extension until 2027 when the contract would run out. It is not yet known whether another contract will be negotiated in 2027.
Some motoring organisations have called on the two sides to go further and allow greater access to services at the counter, most notably the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA).
While it said the contract extension in 2023 was welcomed, it called on the DVLA to allow bulk services to be completed at Post Office branches to tax vehicles.
It stated that it would be working with the DVLA to roll out new changes “as soon as practical” to help individuals, fleets and businesses.
Motorists are able to renew their Vehicle Excise Duty at selected Post Office branches for £25. They will either need their V5C logbook, a V11 form or a V85/1 form if they have a HGV.
