Dubai Police e-bike crackdown

Dubai Police have arrested 90 people and seized their e-bikes following a series of safety violations at Kite Beach sport tracks, the authority has announced.

“The stunts they were pulling were dangerous not only for the riders but also for the people around them,” Dubai Police explained in a post on X, affirming that they “will not tolerate taking the necessary measures against anyone who violates the law and safety procedures.”

The crackdown comes amid ongoing debate over the use and regulation of e-bikes and scooters across the emirate. While the vehicles offer an eco-friendly alternative for short-distance travel, safety concerns have prompted increased scrutiny from authorities.

Last week, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority issued guidance on the safe operation of such vehicles, emphasising the importance of adhering to speed limits displayed on signboards along designated tracks.

The authority also urged riders to avoid travelling outside designated or shared lanes and to wear appropriate safety equipment, including helmets and bright or reflective clothing to maintain visibility.

Riders have been advised to maintain safe distances from other e-scooters, bicycles and pedestrians whilst using the vehicles. In December, guidance was also issued on determining liability and calculating penalties in the event of accidents involving e-bikes.
