Saudi Endorses Electric Rail Link to Qatar

Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet has approved a high-speed electric train project linking the Kingdom with the State of Qatar, marking a major step toward deeper regional connectivity and economic integration across the Gulf.

The decision was taken during a Cabinet session chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Riyadh, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The Cabinet said the cross-border rail project will support transportation efficiency, stimulate tourism, and boost economic activity, describing it as one of the region’s most prominent development initiatives.

Cross-border rail to enhance mobility

Once completed, the railway is expected to enhance mobility between the two countries through a modern, state-of-the-art network that strengthens Gulf cooperation and integration.

Officials highlighted the project’s potential to reshape cross-border travel by offering a fast, sustainable alternative for passengers, while also facilitating trade and economic ties between Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

During the same session, the Cabinet also welcomed the decision by the United States to lift sanctions imposed on the Syrian Arab Republic. It praised the role played by US President Donald Trump, from announcing the move during his visit to the Kingdom to signing legislation repealing the Caesar Act, noting the positive regional implications of the decision.

The rail link forms part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to expand regional infrastructure, enhance connectivity with neighbouring states and advance economic diversification through large-scale transport and logistics projects.
