Kuwait signs $119mn electricity infrastructure contracts for new city

Kuwait has signed electricity infrastructure contracts worth KD36.5 million (US$119 million), to support the development of South Sabah Al Ahmad City, according to the Kuwait News Agency.

The Public Authority for Housing Welfare announced that two contracts have been awarded for the supply, installation and maintenance of underground 400-kilovolt power cables. The cables will feed four main substations serving the new residential city, forming a core part of its electrical infrastructure.

Strengthening power infrastructure for housing

Acting Director General Rashid Al Enezi said the contracts are aligned with the state’s plans to secure reliable power networks for new residential developments and to ensure the sustainability of essential services. He noted that robust electrical infrastructure is critical to preparing new cities to receive residents and meet long-term demand.

According to Al Enezi, the two contracts cover cable works connected to four substations and have a completion period of 26 months. Construction of the substations themselves is continuing in parallel, with the first phase of the power substation programme expected to be completed by July 2026.

He added that wider infrastructure works at South Sabah Al Ahmad City are progressing steadily. The main roads project reached 75.79 per cent completion as of December, while contracts covering residential infrastructure are progressing on schedule or ahead of plan.

Al Enezi said the projects represent a key phase in establishing integrated electrical and service infrastructure across the city. Once completed, the works will help ensure that South Sabah Al Ahmad City is fully prepared to provide sustainable and reliable services to future residents.

The development forms part of Kuwait’s broader efforts to expand housing capacity through the delivery of new, fully serviced residential cities. The latest contracts highlight the focus on delivering core utilities alongside roads and housing construction, in line with national urban development plans.

The Public Authority for Housing Welfare said the electricity infrastructure projects will play a central role in supporting the city’s long-term readiness, reinforcing Kuwait’s commitment to developing modern residential areas supported by resilient and sustainable services.
