Mott MacDonald to develop airport masterplans across Saudi Arabia
Global engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Saudi Arabia’s Matarat Holding to update and develop masterplans for 25 airports across the Kingdom, in a move aimed at advancing the country’s aviation and economic growth objectives under Vision 2030.
The appointment, made under the Airports Masterplan Framework, tasks Mott MacDonald with delivering updated masterplans, capacity assessments, and development strategies for airports owned and operated by Matarat and its subsidiaries.
The two-year framework will guide infrastructure investment and operational planning for short-, medium-, and long-term growth.
Mott MacDonald’s work will include evaluating demand, facility capacity, land use, and environmental impact while preparing 25-year capital investment estimates. The airports covered include the two main hubs in Riyadh and Jeddah, as well as regional, domestic, and remote airports serving social and developmental roles.
Jonathan Looker, Managing Director for Saudi Arabia at Mott MacDonald, said: “It’s an exciting period for aviation development in Saudi Arabia. We look forward to working with Matarat Holding on robust airport development plans that can meet changing passenger demand, cargo growth and drive positive returns on investment.”
Engineer Turki AlMubadal, Executive Vice President of Projects and Technical Affairs at Matarat, said: “Matarat is pleased to enter into this framework agreement with Mott MacDonald for the refresh of airport master plans across the Kingdom.
“By combining Mott MacDonald’s global expertise with the capabilities of Matarat’s team, we are not only meeting current planning requirements but also strengthening the local competencies that will support the long-term growth and resilience of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s aviation ecosystem.”
The initiative forms part of Saudi Arabia’s wider aviation strategy to enhance airport capacity, attract investment, and expand connectivity across the Kingdom.
