Saudi Arabia expands mining ties with Chile, Canada and Brazil

Saudi Arabia has signed three international memoranda of understanding on mineral resources cooperation with Chile, Canada and Brazil, as the kingdom looks to deepen global partnerships in the mining and minerals sector.

The agreements were concluded by the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources on the sidelines of the Ministerial Roundtable held during the 5th annual Future Minerals Forum, which is being held in Riyadh from 13 to 15 January.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the memoranda reflect Saudi Arabia’s efforts to expand its international partnerships and enhance technical and investment cooperation in the mining sector in a way that serves mutual interests and supports the sustainable development of mineral resources.

The signing ceremony included agreements with the Chilean Ministry of Mining, the Canadian Department of Natural Resources and the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy. The memoranda focus on cooperation in the field of mineral resources, although no further details were disclosed on the scope or implementation of the agreements.

The deals were signed during the Ministerial Roundtable, which organisers said recorded the largest level of international participation of its kind. More than 100 countries were represented, including all members of the Group of Twenty, as well as the European Union. The meeting was also attended by representatives from 59 multilateral organisations, industry associations and non-governmental organisations.

Officials said the scale of participation underlines the status the ministerial meeting has attained as a leading international platform for aligning perspectives, building partnerships and developing practical solutions to global challenges facing the mining and minerals sector.

The Future Minerals Forum brings together government officials, industry leaders, investors and international organisations to discuss issues related to mineral supply chains, sustainability, financing and investment.
