The approval was granted by the General Authority of Civil Aviation following the airport’s successful completion of all required national and international safety assessments, confirming full technical, operational and procedural readiness in line with the highest global aviation safety standards.

The introduction of cross-runway takeoff operations is expected to significantly enhance runway utilisation efficiency at Jeddah’s main international gateway.

By reducing aircraft ground movement and holding times, the new operating model will optimise the use of airport infrastructure, particularly during peak traffic periods.

These changes are expected to support smoother air traffic flow, strengthen operational resilience and contribute to an improved passenger experience through more reliable departures and reduced congestion on the airfield.

The approval also supports the sustainability objectives of Jeddah Airports Company, the operator of King Abdulaziz International Airport.

Saudi aviation milestone

Shorter taxiing distances and reduced engine-on ground time are expected to lower fuel consumption and cut carbon emissions, aligning with national environmental priorities and the Kingdom’s broader sustainability commitments.

The milestone reflects King Abdulaziz International Airport’s continued adoption of global best practices and advanced operational models, reinforcing its position as a leading aviation hub in the region.
