Facebook Marketplace to display eBay listings to appease EU regulators

Meta is set to start displaying eBay listings in its own Facebook Marketplace classifieds platform, in an effort to appease European regulators.

Back in November, Meta was hit with a €798 million fine by the European Commission (EC) in Europe for breaching antitrust rules. The EC contended that Meta created “unfair trading conditions” by connecting Facebook Marketplace to its core social network. By doing so, Meta gained a “substantial distribution advantage,” while some of its classifieds competitors also advertise their wares on Facebook — data that Meta could also use to the “sole benefit of Facebook Marketplace.”

Meta has previously said it would appeal this fine, but a Bloomberg report today notes that it also will start testing a new service that will enable Facebook Marketplace users to browse eBay listings, linking directly through to eBay to complete the transaction.

Curiously, Bloomberg reports that in addition to Germany and France, the test will also be launched in its domestic U.S. market, which is beyond the purview of European regulators.
