U.S. President Donald Trump revealed plans to impose tariffs on eight European countries beginning February 1, 2026. 

The announcement targets Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. 

Trump stated these measures will continue until Denmark agrees to sell Greenland to the United States. The initial 10% tariff will escalate to 25% by June 1, 2026.

Tariff Strategy Linked to National Security Concerns

The president outlined his position through a detailed statement on social media. Trump claimed the United States has supported European Union nations for years without collecting tariffs. 

According to his statement, “We have subsidized Denmark, and all of the Countries of the European Union” for many years. He argued that Denmark must reciprocate after centuries of this arrangement.

Trump pointed to strategic concerns about foreign interest in Greenland. He wrote that “China and Russia want Greenland, and there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it.” 

According to Trump, Denmark lacks adequate defense capabilities for the island. He described their current protection as minimal in his assessment.

The president asserted that only American leadership can manage this situation effectively. His statement declared that “Only the United States of America, under PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP, can play in this game.” 

Trump connected the issue to both U.S. national security and global stability. He warned that European nations visiting Greenland created a dangerous dynamic.

Trump characterized these visits as occurring “for purposes unknown” and threatening planetary safety. He described the current situation as creating “a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable.” 

The president framed the tariffs as necessary protective measures. He called for swift action to resolve what he termed a perilous circumstance.

The president noted that the United States has pursued Greenland’s acquisition for over 150 years. His statement explained that “The United States has been trying to do this transaction for over 150 years.” 

Denmark consistently rejected these offers throughout history. Trump stated that modern circumstances make the purchase more critical than ever.

The announcement referenced advanced weapons systems as justification for the acquisition. Trump mentioned “The Golden Dome, and Modern Day Weapons Systems, both Offensive and Defensive” as reasons the acquisition is important.

Trump explained that maximum efficiency requires Greenland’s inclusion in these defense networks. He stated the system “can only work at its maximum potential and efficiency, because of angles, metes, and bounds, if this Land is included.”
