15 Best ‘Pitch Perfect’ Performances, Ranked

Published

on

Music brings the world together as a universal art that we all have and can relate to. It’s why we tend to have an adoration for films that feature music. Riding on the high of Glee and The Sing-Off during the early 2000s came a film franchise that made a major impact on pop culture. That franchise was Pitch Perfect. Bringing to life the journey of the Barden Bellas, an a capella group at the fictional Barden University, the three films celebrated friendship and joy through the mutual love of song.

While the plots of all three films followed a similar blueprint, with the third film even poking fun at the need for a competition, the one unifying element no one can deny is the exceptional use of music throughout the films. From standalone singles to mash-ups and riff-offs, the performances are still the moments in the film we continue to discuss. It’s time to break down the greatest performances from all three films, focusing on the impact on the story, the emotions they pull out, and the musical arrangements and composition.

“Cups” — Beca

‘Pitch Perfect’

This one is here mostly for sentimental reasons and for the impact it had in elevating the film into the pop culture lexicon. In the first film, our exposition reveals that the Barden Bellas are having difficulty scouting a new group of Bellas after co-leader Aubrey Posen (Anna Camp) puked on stage during their performance. After the school-wide a cappella auditions seemed to finish, Beca Mitchell (Anna Kendrick) walks in, deciding to audition. Rather than singing her rendition of “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson as the other hopefuls did, she pulls out a cup and offers the now iconic “Cups.”

A reworked version of The Carter Family folk song “When I’m Gone,” which had been revived by Lulu and the Lampshades, Beca uses the beloved children’s clapping game as her percussion as she shows off her skills. While Beca may not bring the most pristine a cappella vocal in this moment, what Aubrey and Chloe (Brittany Snow) hear is someone who can make music, something Beca will forever be identified with. In the context of the film, the clapping game is used later in the performance, proving this audition isn’t just a blip. If you were a fan of the movie, you probably tried the cup game yourself. (If you were like me, you failed.)

World Championships — Das Sound Machine

From nationals to worlds! After being tossed out of the ICCAs, the Barden Bellas had to prove their worth in Pitch Perfect 2 by winning the international competition. As with sequel films, there was always going to be one major adversary standing in their way at the finals. Das Sound Machine, the German representatives, brought a very different sound and style to the Bellas. Where the Bellas were classical a capella, Das Sound Machine relied on percussive staccato with intensity.

Throughout the film, the fight to the top seemed tougher than ever as Das Sound Machine brought showmanship like the Bellas had never seen, and their championship performance was no different. Both explosive and pointed, Das Sound Machine gave a mashup of “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)” by Fall Out Boy and “All I Do Is Win” by DJ Khaled featuring T. Pain, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, and Rick Ross. It was certainly a solid performance that showed how strong a team they were, but in the world of storytelling, never try to claim victory before the crown is on your head! Knowing that we needed a Bellas victory, perhaps that’s why Das Sound Machine didn’t give their best performance here. But it’s still exceptional nevertheless.

13

Pool Mash-Up — The Barden Bellas

‘Pitch Perfect’

In every good story, there must be a moment of potential defeat in which our heroines come together to find their purpose once again. In Pitch Perfect, that came in the form of the Pool Mash-Up. After being scolded by Aubrey for going rogue during the ICAA semi-finals, the Bellas feel that their chances of winning are slim. Even though Beca brought a newfound sound through her improvisation, the Bellas were still missing something. And so, following a brief hiatus of quitting, Beca returns to amplify things.

The Bellas head to the pool, and Beca leads the team in a lesson on remix. Aubrey selects Bruno Mars‘ “Just the Way You Are” as the starting song, which allows Beca to layer in “Just a Dream” by Nelly. Of course, it’s perfect. Smiles fill the girls’ faces, and the Bellas have a newfound path to victory. In the world of a capella, mash-ups have been a modern recipe for excitement, driving the evolution of the art form. By the old-school Bellas shedding their past for a modern sound, they, too, evolve with the times.

“Cheap Thrills” — The Bellas

‘Pitch Perfect 3’

Arguably the weakest of the three films, Pitch Perfect 3 was essentially fan service to wrap up a wonderful franchise. The story by Kay Cannon and Mike White (yes, that Mike White) was exactly what it needed to be in terms of sequels. The weakest link was the overall music selection. That said, when the right songs were brought in, Pitch Perfect 3 was divine. Such was the case when The Bellas offered their first performance during the USO tour.

Following their fellow opening acts’ performances, The Bellas hit the stage with Sia‘s “Cheap Thrills.” Decked out in naval Americana outfits, The Bellas did what they do best: tight harmonies. It’s an interesting performance, as they opted for a singular song rather than a mash-up, but maybe being conservative for the troops was the right direction. That said, the random competition added to the story gave credence and reason to believe that the girls may not be victorious. They were back to their roots, singing beautifully, but not proving they could beat out their competitors.

11

“Lollipop” — The Treblemakers

‘Pitch Perfect 2’

Pitch Perfect 2 decided to pull out a severely underrated artist and elevate him to a new audience. After The Barden Bellas were tossed out of the ICCA and told they could no longer recruit, the number one a cappella troupe on campus was The Treblemakers. Now, without Bumper (Adam Devine), it was Jesse (Skylar Astin) and Benji (Ben Platt) leading the boy group.

As the premier group at Barden, they were invited to provide the orientation performance in which they sang an incredible version of Mika‘s “Lollipop.” Of course, the song is littered with innuendo through a peppy sound, and they brought their signature essence while being just a tad cheeky. It’s a really fun performance of a wonderful song. Mika, who just released a brand new studio album, proved to be the perfect artist for that moment before we essentially said goodbye to The Treblemakers. Yes, this was their last solo in the franchise.

10

Car Show — Das Sound Machine

‘Pitch Perfect 2’

Pitch Perfect 2 introduced perhaps the most formidable opponent across all three films in Das Sound Machine. Led by the beautifully intimidating Kommissar (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen) and robust second-in-command Pieter Krämer (Flula Borg), they epitomized the antagonists with ease. They were wittily condescending and strikingly imposing. We had heard that they were going to give the Barden Bellas a run for their money, and it was proven when they stepped on stage during their US tour at the Car Show — a gig they took from our heroines.

The powerhouse team didn’t give a typical a cappella performance — instead, they showcased their artistry through a dominating mashup of “Uprising” by Muse and “Tsunami” by DVBBS and Borgeous. Very European. What Das Sound Machine brought to this performance was the ability to showcase spectacle and choreography that contrasted what the Bellas provide. No wonder the Bellas had to step up their game!

When it came to the USO tour, DJ Khaled invited a quartet of musical groups to perform and ultimately compete to open up for him for the filmed special. In addition to the Bellas, it was rapping duo Young Sparrow (Trinidad James) and DJ Dragon Nutz (D.J. Looney), country crooners Saddle Up (Whiskey Shivers), and female rockers Evermoist, led by Calamity (Ruby Rose). Meant to be the Bellas’ biggest competitors, Evermoist proved they knew how to put on a show.

Before the Bellas hit the stage, they performed an original track called “How a Heart Unbreaks.” A tried-and-true pop-rock song, Evermoist had the Bellas shaking in their heels. Evermoist, which also featured the appropriately named Serenity (Andy Allo), Veracity (Hannah Fairlight), and Charity (Venzella Joy Williams), offered such a strong performance that you almost wished they were real! Sadly, the song didn’t quite take off in the same way that the Pitch Perfect 2 original song “Flashlight” did.

8

Riff-Off — The Barden Bellas, The Treblemakers, The BU Harmonics

‘Pitch Perfect’

Aside from “Cups,” the musical moment that put Pitch Perfect on the map was the Riff-Off. Per tradition at Barden, the various a cappella groups on campus would battle it out in a Riff-Off for a cappella glory and the microphone used by Hoobastank when they rocked out at the Schnee Performing Arts Center. The way the Riff-Off works is that a category is selected. A group starts with a song that works, then another group comes in using the last word of the song. The train continues until a song is missed or a word is inappropriately used. In the first film, the Riff-Off is performed by The Barden Bellas, The Treblemakers, and the BU Harmonics.

The Riff-Off begins with “Ladies of the ’80s” kicked off with The Trebles taking on “Mickey” by Toni Basil, The BU Harmonics singing “Like a Virgin” by Madonna, The Bellas coming in with Pat Benatar‘s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” and the BU Harmonics being *clap, clap* CUT OFF by wrongly singing “It Must Have Been Love” by Roxette. The second round gives the remaining teams “Songs About Sex,” featuring The Bellas singing “S&M” by Rihanna, The Trebles taking on “Let’s Talk About Sex” by Salt-N-Pepa, The Bellas countering with “I’ll make Love to You” by Boyz II Men, Jesse coming in with Foreigner‘s “Feels Like the First Time,” only for Beca being cut off by misusing “No Diggity” by Blackstreet and Dr. Dre and Queen Pen. The Riff-Off is a moment of team building and unity. For the audience, it’s a celebration of music and the ability to hear the magic of a cappella like never before.

Riff-Off — Das Sound Machine, Tone Hangers, The Barden Bellas, Green Bay Packers, The Treblemakers

‘Pitch Perfect 2’

The reason the Riff-Off from Pitch Perfect 2 tops the Riff-Off from Pitch Perfect is that they were forced to step up their game. After being invited to a secret party by Sir Willups Brightlysmore (David Cross), The Barden Bellas engage in a Riff-Off with a random assortment of competitors, including Das Sound Machine, the Tone Hangers featuring Bumper, The Treblemakers, and the most bizarre cameo from the Green Bay Packers, comprised of Clay Matthews, David Bakhtiari, Don Barclay, Josh Sitton, and T.J. Lang. Like the original, the game is the same.

In this medley, the Riff-Off begins with “Songs About Butts,” which is, as Beca puts it, “Anything on the radio.” Das Sound Machine starts with Sisqo‘s “Thong Song,” before the Tone Hangers come in with “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty” by KC and the Sunshine Band. In comes The Bellas with a saucy rendition of “Low” from Flo Rida featuring T-Pain before a personalized rendition of “Bootylicious” by Destiny’s Child from the Packers. Sadly, getting cut off first are The Trebles with Sir Mix-a-Lot‘s “Baby Got Back” when Benji sees his crush, Emily (Hailee Steinfeld), across the room. The next category is “Country Love,” in which Clay Matthews is eager to kick things off, but it’s the Tone Hangers with “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw that’s first. The Bellas counter with “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood, only for the Packers to be stumped, as they had their mind on the “42gs at D&Bs.”

The next round is “I Dated John Mayer,” which Bumper is thrilled about, as he was his personal assistant. Das Sound Machine begins with “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton, and the Bellas come in with Taylor Swift‘s “We Are Never Getting Back Together.” When it is time for Bumper, he sings “What’s Love Got to Do with It” by Tina Turner, making the entire room question whether Tina Turner and John Mayer ever dated. Spoiler, they did not. The final showdown sees Das Sound Machine against the Barden Bellas in a face-off in “’90s Hip Hop Jamz.” It’s a quick succession of songs going from “This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan to Lauryn Hill‘s “Doo Wop (That Thing),” Bell Biv DeVoe‘s “Poison” to “Scenario” by A Tribe Called Quest, then “Insane in the Membrane” by Cypress Hill to “Flashlight.” Well, the legacy sings her original song, and the Bellas lose. But it allows us to begin to adore the original track. The extended Riff-Off is a wonderful homage to the original and the best of the three. There’s a reason Pitch Perfect 3‘s iteration is missing because, well, it didn’t work.

Kennedy Center Performance — The Barden Bellas

After winning the Nationals, the Barden Bellas are back for more in Pitch Perfect 2. The sequel, directed by Elizabeth Banks, who also reprises her role as Gail Abernathy-McKadden-Feinberger, sets the film off on the right tone. Having a chance to tour the country, the Bellas are in the nation’s capital, performing at the Kennedy Center, which canonically has yet to be renamed. Understanding the power of mash-ups, our favorite a cappella group gives the crowd, which includes President Barack Obama, a brilliant rendition of songs including “We Got the World” by Icona Pop, “Timber” by Pitbull and Kesha, and “America the Beautiful.”

But, wait, there’s more. Utilizing the rules of a sequel, writer Kay Cannon understood the assignment of having a major debacle lead to the potential destruction of the Bellas and their need to overcome an obstacle. Knowing the importance of spectacle, Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) comes down on silks to sing Miley Cyrus‘ “Wrecking Ball.” And she certainly does, getting caught in the silks and flashing the world her privates. The national scandal known as “Muffgate” kicks off the film’s action. Before the hilarious moment, the mash-up was the Bellas at their finest, showcasing how they’ve improved since their victory in the first film.

Days of our Lives: Jeremy Framed in Elaborate Scheme – Bizarre Twist Rocks Salem?

Published

on

Days of Our Lives: Jeremy Horton (Michael Roark)

Days of Our Lives exposes that Jeremy Horton (Michael Roark) is planning to leave Salem soon, but something is going to mess up his exit plans.

It may be another stalker incident, and now I really wonder if Liam Selejko (Hank Northrop) is to blame and is doing a sketchy sort of frame job on him. I want to dive into what’s behind Jeremy not being allowed to leave Salem when he really wants to, and whether Liam is to blame because he’s a criminal for hire. We have a lot of ground to cover.

Days of Our Lives: Is Liam Selejko Working for Stephanie Johnson’s Stalker?

Now, small-time thug Liam is picking up random criminal gigs. I don’t know if there’s an app like Crooks R Us or TaskRabbit for felons, but not only did the guy that Abe Carver (James Reynolds) is mentoring take money from Peter Blake (Dan Gauthier) to help Vivian Alamain (Louise Sorel) henchman Klaus move those supplies into the crypt, but the question is: could Liam also be taking pay and working for Stephanie Johnson (Abigail Klein) stalker?

Liam obviously does whatever it takes, including criminal activity, to put food on the table for his young son, Gage Selejko. We know that Liam was involved with Vivian’s goon, Klaus, because he described him to the cops. Liam only gave up that info because the cops traced Peter’s money back to him and he wanted to stay out of jail.

Owen Kent and the Search for a Co-Conspirator in Salem on DOOL

We all know that Owen Kent (Wes Ramsey) is the stalker who’s planning to take Stephanie. That was confirmed back in the winter promo. But there also seems to be some signs that Owen may have a co-conspirator or at least somebody doing dirty work for him.

Now, one option is that it is indeed Jeremy, but I feel like it’s not because of the frame job. We still haven’t seen for sure who was in that black hoodie taking video of Stephanie and Alex Kiriakis (Robert Scott Wilson) in Horton Square. That could have been work done for hire by Liam.

It would make sense to hire somebody to take photos of Stephanie and Alex who wouldn’t be noticed. Liam is somebody that people are used to seeing around Salem, unlike Owen, who has been missing since an escape from a prison transport two decades ago. People would notice Owen, but they are used to seeing Liam.

The Sketchy History of Liam Selejko and the Carver Connection

We still don’t know much about Liam other than he’s been in and out of jail for various crimes. Many years ago, when he was in high school, he bullied Theo Carver (Cameron Johnson). Liam’s unusual last name, Selejko, ties him to some sketchy people from Salem’s distant past. Some of them were criminals as well.

Theo was upset when his dad, Abe, said that he would be mentoring Liam for that literacy program as part of his court-ordered rehabilitation. Liam told Abe he’s trying to turn his life around. But at the same time, Liam is a single dad who has to put food on the table to keep his kid in medicine, food, and school supplies.

He’ll take an easy buck where it is, and his only skills seem to be criminal ones. Liam tried to steal Cat Greene (AnnaLynne McCord) purse last year, and then he took money from Klaus via Peter. He then claimed to the cops that he had no idea there were going to be kidnapping victims in the crypt.

EJ DiMera’s Quest for Revenge Against Vivian Alamain on DOOL

Liam claims he thought he was basically doing some kind of prepper thing. EJ DiMera (Dan Feuerriegel) is furious because Vivian masterminded their kidnappings and she seems to be getting away with it because Gwen Rizczech (Emily O’Brien) is trying to frame Dimitri von Leuschner DiMera (Peter Porte).

If EJ can’t punish Vivian, he may target Liam. EJ wants people involved in this to pay for trying to kill the DiMeras. Peter is dead and Vivian is out of his reach right now, but Liam is right there in Salem.

Meanwhile, Liam may have another person that’s ready to take him down. Yvonne and Klaus are in Alamainia this week talking about tying up loose ends to keep Madame Vivian safe for her role in the DiMera kidnappings. They may be figuring out what needs to be done, and those two may decide that Liam needs to go so he cannot keep talking to the cops. In the interim, we may find out that Liam’s been working with Owen.

How Jeremy Horton Was Framed Using His Own Laptop on Days of Our Lives

Do you remember the time that Abe couldn’t be there for his tutoring session with Liam? I think it was when Theo was either kidnapped or in the hospital. Abe asked Jeremy to fill in for him.

Jeremy showed up for Liam’s mentoring session and brought along his laptop for Liam to use to work on a resume. Jeremy’s kindness might have been repaid with treachery. Liam was on Jeremy’s computer, so he could have planted evidence on the laptop to make Jeremy the scapegoat. This would ensure people won’t know that Liam is the true culprit.

Jeremy was in the dark about why they thought he owned the website dedicated to stalking Stephanie. Liam could have had the credit card info from Owen and taken that opportunity to use Jeremy’s computer. Liam may have been tasked with just buying the URL on someone’s laptop. Maybe he got lucky with Jeremy, or maybe he was specifically targeting him.

The Case Against Jeremy: Do Jada Hunter and Steve Johnson Have Proof?

Up until now, Jada Hunter (Elia Cantu), Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols), Kayla Brady (Mary Beth Evans), Stephanie, and her new husband, Alex, have all been 100% certain Jeremy’s the stalker. Jeremy insists he’s not guilty and thinks someone is setting him up, but only Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes) actually believes him.

It is possible Liam is taking money from Owen to lay this groundwork so that Owen can fly under the radar. If Liam is helping set up Jeremy, I’m sure Liam knows he’s doing a bad thing. Now, Julie believes in Jeremy, but her track record on judgment isn’t perfect. She believed the best of Doug Williams III (Peyton Meyer), and that turned out badly. Julie also stuck up for Nick Fallon (Blake Berris), who was just very bad.

Jeremy Horton’s Transformation and Stephanie Johnson’s Suspicions on Days

Jeremy claims even though he and Stephanie had a toxic relationship, he has changed. So, Jeremy went and got his teaching degree and seems well-respected at the elementary school. Other than the suspicions of Jada Hunter, Stephanie, Alex, and Steve, there’s no solid proof against Jeremy.

They’re judging him on his past from many years ago when he and Stephanie had a troubled relationship. Jeremy is to blame for what he did back then, but that was a long time ago. When he first came back to Salem, he appealed to Stephanie to apologize.

From the get-go, she just assumed Jeremy was up to no good and was stalking her again. I kind of think there’s some ego around that for her to think that Jeremy is still obsessed with her after all this time. Stephanie even thinks Jeremy hacked the Salem dating app to get a date with her bestie Jada. That seems like a big reach.

Owen Kent’s Plan to Kidnap Stephanie Johnson Kiriakis on DOOL

Now that Stephanie and Alex are newly married, the stalker has that bug in the photo frame. He’s probably listening to them celebrating being husband and wife and honeymooning. It’s creepy, but Owen is a stalker after all, and he is another one who had a fixation on Stephanie.

Her marrying Alex may force Owen to escalate the schedule of what he’s going to do. We know he’s going to kidnap Stephanie. Owen may have been planning to snatch her before they elope, but then they snuck off and tied the knot.

We could see Stephanie snatched very soon. When she’s taken, Alex assaults Jeremy, blaming him. We know Stephanie is taken from the hospital. Then in the park, Steve grabs a guy in a dark hoodie, expecting to have grabbed Jeremy the kidnapper. But it’s Owen Kent—a blast from the past nobody was expecting.

Jeremy Horton’s Final Air Date and Future in Salem on Days of Our Lives

In the end, we may find out Liam was helping Owen set up Jeremy. Jeremy Horton’s last air date as Jeremy is not until the end of April, so he can go ahead and pack his bags, but he is not leaving Salem just yet.

I expect another stalkerish event points back to Jeremy, having the SPD demanding that he stay in Salem and doesn’t leave. Alright, that’s what we have for you today on Days of Our Lives. Stay tuned to see what’s next for Jeremy!

Additionally, Tia Kemp even hopped up Victoria Woods’ new smile in her comment section.

Before GloRilla’s Sister, Victoria Woods, Showed Off Her New Smile, Tia Kemp Said THIS In Defense Of GloRilla

As The Shade Room previously reported, before GloRilla’s sister showed off her new smile, Victoria Woods turned heads by responding to Tia Kemp. At the time, Kemp had defended GloRilla from Woods’ claims that she abandoned her and their family. Specifically, Kemp said that Woods needed to get off of her “niece.”

“Alright? Okay? You leave her the f**k alone — I ain’t gon’ say it no more. Go get your $2,500 flat. Eat your spicy chicken sandwiches and them diddy dogs them n****s feeding your ass and leave her the f**k alone. Okay? Leave her alone now. You better leave her the f**k alone,” Kemp stated.

This ultimately led Woods to respond.

Celebrating The 40th Anniversary Of The Greatest Batman Ever Made

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

For better or for worse, we are currently living through the age of superhero cinema, with movies like Avengers: Endgame and Superman (2025) dominating the box office. But would you believe that this entire genre owes its existence to a single comic? A comic that also managed to inspire some of the greatest TV shows the world has ever known?

That comic is Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns, the seminal Batman comic that recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Miller’s comic is very nearly perfect, and it helped usher in a modern age of darker and grittier superhero stories. That much is well known, but today, I’d like to focus on a lesser-known fact: that the modern superhero genre of movies simply wouldn’t exist without The Dark Knight Returns.

You’ll Believe A Batman Can Fly

The success of the 1978 Superman movie proved that tights-and-flights films had the potential to be critical and commercial hits. Accordingly, that film got three sequels, but the franchise did not keep going “up, up, and away.” Eventually, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace proved to be such a critical and commercial disaster that we didn’t get another Superman movie for nearly two decades.

Following the success of the first Superman movie, a new Batman film went into development at Warner Bros. in 1980. After he wowed everyone with Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (his first feature film), young Tim Burton was hired in 1985 to direct this new Batman film. He immediately wanted a darker, less campy script.

Conveniently enough, The Dark Knight Returns came out one year later, and the success of Frank Miller’s comic made the public hungry for a serious take on the Caped Crusader even as it made Warner Bros. keener on bringing this Darker Knight to the big screen.

Obviously, the 1989 Batman film went through many rewrites over the years, including several lighter-hearted drafts that included Robin, the Boy Wonder. But Burton really wanted his film to have the grim and gritty atmosphere of Miller’s comic, so he insisted on a story with the same basic beats as The Dark Knight Returns: Batman is obsessive, the Joker is deadly, and Gotham City is a cesspool. Burton’s film ended up being a smash hit, launching a Batman film franchise that continues to this day.

When Cartoons Got Dark

batman the animated series

Tim Burton’s Batman made the character more popular than ever before, and Warner Bros. quickly began developing a new cartoon featuring the Caped Crusader. The result was Batman: The Animated Series, a show that modeled Gotham City after the one scene in the 1989 film. There were some different design flourishes (mostly, the abundant Art Deco style of the buildings), but Gotham retained the dark and broody atmosphere that electrified fans of the live-action film.

Batman: The Animated Series won multiple Emmy awards, so you may be shocked to hear that Warner Bros. executives were nervous about the new show. They feared that executive producer Bruce Timm was making everything way too violent for children.

Warners wanted to cancel the series before a single episode was animated, but the success of Burton’s movie kept that from happening. Eventually, Timm was able to create the pilot episode “On Leatherwings,” which was so impressive that it helped his controversial series (complete with music from and inspired by Danny Elfman, the composer of Burton’s Batman) get the green light.

Batman: The Animated Series quickly became one of the most popular cartoons ever made, and the release of various sequel series (including Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League) established the fan-favorite DC Animated Universe. The DCAU was the first truly viable superhero cinematic universe, one that helped pave the way for the MCU. Before that happened, though, The Dark Knight Returns helped inspire Earth’s mightiest mutants.

Rise Of The Mutants

marvel wolverine

Tim Burton’s Batman would not have existed (or at least, wouldn’t have been worth watching) without the influence of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. But after Burton left, the franchise was in the hands of Lost Boys director Joel Schumacher. He made the franchise over-the-top with Batman Forever and downright silly with Batman & Robin. After audiences rejected that campy crapfest and Blade proved to be a big hit, 20th Century Fox made a decision: they’d swoop in and take the comic book movie crown away from DC with an X-Men movie.

That film came out in 2000, eventually getting two sequels, four prequels, and three spin-offs featuring Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. The success of Fox’s X-Men spurred Sony to create a Spider-Man movie in 2002, and Sam Raimi eventually delivered an entire trilogy of webslinging goodness.

Ironically, these characters were only available to the studios because Marvel had to sell the movie rights back in the late 90s to avoid bankruptcy. After seeing how successful Fox and Sony were, though, Marvel decided to create its own films and television projects, all of which would later be known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Obviously, the MCU proved to be a huge hit with audiences, spawning nearly 20 years of movies. Eventually, this inspired Warner Bros. to try its own hand at a superhero cinematic universe, and they created the DCEU as a direct competitor to the MCU. The second film in this new cinematic universe was Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and (for better or for worse), returning director Zack Snyder based his slightly older, much darker version of the Caped Crusader on Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.

It’s All Connected

Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns has had an outsized impact on movies and television, serving as the foundation of modern geek culture. Without the success of this comic, we don’t get successful Batman movies; without the later failure of Batman & Robin (which veered away from Miller’s dark tone), we don’t get the X-Men movies. Without those films and Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, we wouldn’t have the MCU, and without that, we wouldn’t have the DCEU or (more recently) the DCU.

It’s all connected, and comic nerds everywhere owe it to themselves to re-read this comic. Considering that it may be years before we see Batman properly appear in the DCU, re-reading it is currently the best way to experience the most iconic and fully formed version of the Caped Crusader ever made. Just be careful when handling this old comic; after all, you’ve got a genuine piece of pop culture history in your hands!

Her caption also revealed that the family’s reward has been raised to $1 million, which will be paid “only for the recovery” of Nancy.

“Coming on to say it is day 24 since our mom was taken in the dark of night from her bed, and every hour and minute and second and every long night has been agony since then, of worrying about her and fearing for her, aching for her, and most of all, just missing her, missing her,” Savannah said in her video. “We know that millions of you have been praying. So many people have been praying of every faith and no faith at all, praying for her return, and we feel those prayers. Please keep praying without ceasing. We still believe. We still believe in a miracle.”

The disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie, continues to provide more questions than answers. “To be clear … the Guthrie family — to include all siblings and spouses — have been cleared as possible suspects in this case. The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case,” Nanos said in a statement via X. “To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel. The Guthrie family are victims plain and simple … please, I’m begging you the media to honor your profession and report with some sense of compassion and professionalism.”

The FBI previously released photos and video footage of a masked individual at Nancy’s home, but three weeks into the search, no suspects have been officially identified.

While some haircare products contain up to 75% water, this formula’s secret is an olive oil-derived squalane and Tuberose flower extract. Alone, the two work to hydrate, promote softness, smooth the hair cuticle and give you that enviable, celebrity-like shine. Beyond its game-changing ingredients, which continue to impress shoppers, the shampoo concentrate offers a dreamy aroma reminiscent of delicate white florals.

To use it, run the tube under hot water for 30 seconds to get things going and break up the texture. A little bit goes a long way, so squeeze a quarter-size amount into your hand with a few drops of water, then massage it between your palms until it forms a rich lather. After massaging it into the scalp to cleanse your hair, rinse it out, then follow up with your normal wash day routine. You won’t be able to deny how soft and glossy your strands feel after using this shine-inducing number.

One Target shopper called out how well this shampoo cleanses. “It’s not drying, unlike other formulas, and really cleans the scalp. Netflix’s Hard-R, Hardcore Sci-Fi Thriller Goes Full On Mad Max

Netflix's Hard-R, Hardcore Sci-Fi Thriller Goes Full On Mad Max

By Robert Scucci
| Published

Given the Mad Max franchise’s influence on the pop culture landscape since it kicked off in 1979, it’s easy to call any post-apocalyptic road thriller set in the Australian Outback a cheap imitation. The way I’ve made peace with that kind of assessment is by appreciating the fact that Mad Max created its own distinct genre, where there’s plenty of room for filmmakers to work out similar concepts while still offering their own take. 2014’s The Rover, written and directed by David Michôd, is a shining example of using the punishing Australian desert as a backdrop to tell his story about a society well into its ongoing collapse.

With Guy Pearce leading the charge with support from Robert Pattinson, The Rover is a violent journey across barren landscapes inhabited by people who’ve been forgotten by the rest of the world. It’s a lawless land, but there are still clear power structures at play. Watching those structures slowly fall apart makes for a satisfying watch because society collapsed recently enough for people to remember the before times, but not so recently that they aren’t aware of where things are heading.

A Rampage For A Stolen Car

The Rover 2014

Before The Rover’s conflict is properly established, we’re introduced to Archie (David Field), Caleb (Tawanda Manyimo), and Henry (Scoot McNairy). They’re fleeing a robbery, and with them is Rey (Robert Pattinson), Henry’s younger brother. Having been injured during the robbery, Rey is kicked out of the vehicle and left for dead. During the scuffle, their car crashes, prompting them to steal a new getaway vehicle.

Unfortunately for the gang, they stole a car belonging to a nomadic loner named Eric (Guy Pearce). Having lived through society’s initial collapse roughly 10 years earlier, which resulted in the loss of his family and his farm, Eric doesn’t take too kindly to the thieves and immediately sets out to hunt them down, obstacles be damned. Stumbling upon a gravely injured Rey, who he knows was at the very least indirectly responsible for his car getting stolen, Eric brings him to a doctor to nurse him back to health before grilling him on his brother’s whereabouts.

The Rover 2014

Along the way, Eric has violent encounters with a gun-dealing dwarf operating out of an opium den, traveling circus members, and what’s left of the Australian Army, who still try to exert power over the country’s citizens despite lacking the firepower they once had. Rey, dragged along and not fully himself due to his injuries, proves to be more burden than leverage, complicating matters for Eric, who just wants to retrieve his car and get back to being a miserable drunk wandering through the wasteland.

A Madmaxian Action Flick That Stands On Its Own

While the obvious Mad Max setup can be found in The Rover, it never once feels like a carbon copy of the franchise that inspired it. We’ve got the Australian desert, car chases, and showdowns packed with firepower, but given how wide-reaching the lore is in Mad Max, there’s plenty of room for films like The Rover to occupy similar thematic territory while traveling a completely different road. Using that template as a jumping-off point, The Rover tells a more personal story about loss and revenge that would work just as well in any other setting.

The Rover 2014

Michôd has gone on record about the similarities, stating, “You put cars in the desert in Australia and people are going to think of Mad Max, and with all due respect to that film, I think The Rover is going to be way more chillingly authentic and menacing.” He’s not wrong in that assessment because there are no nitro trucks and masked marauders here. There’s no sprawling folklore that feels almost biblical. Instead, we get a raw glimpse of humanity barely hanging on by a thread, and we witness the continued collapse of society while it’s still actively happening.

As of this writing, The Rover is streaming on Netflix.
