A 7% RT Thriller Starring Dolph Lundgren Just Beat One of Netflix’s Most Star-Studded Films of the Year
It isn’t unusual for the streaming charts to witness a shocker once in a while. For instance, it wasn’t too long ago that Man With No Past — an action movie with no Rotten Tomatoes score — ended up beating the $1.5 billion blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick on Paramount+. Of course, it’s another matter that Maverick has remained a constant presence on the streamer’s leader board, while Man With No Past has dropped like an anchor. Something similar unfolded this week in the Netflix rankings, when the low-key action film Wanted Man ended up beating not only every film in the Hangover trilogy, but also the streamer’s massive new hit, A House of Dynamite.
Starring Dolph Lundgren and Kelsey Grammer, Wanted Man took the fourth spot in its domestic Netflix debut on November 11, overtaking The Hangover, The Hangover Part II, and The Hangover Part III. The leader board was topped by Guillermo del Toro‘s Frankenstein, which drew nearly 30 million views in its opening weekend. Starring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, the epic drama earned positive reviews and is attracting Oscar buzz already, as is A House of Dynamite, which features Rebecca Ferguson and Idris Elba. Wanted Man, on the other hand, is sitting on a 7% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to starring in the movie, Lundgren also co-wrote and directed it. It debuted day-and-date in limited theatrical release and on PVOD platforms last year.
An ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Cast Member Also Stars
Lundgren, who remains best known for his work in the action genre, and on franchises such as Rocky and The Expendables, reprised his iconic role as Ivan Drago in 2018’s critical and commercial hit Creed II. However, most of his recent output — minus supporting roles in Aquaman and its sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom — has been of the direct-to-video kind. In Wanted Man, he plays a detective protecting a young woman who witnessed the murder of DEA agents carried out by members of a cartel. Lundgren’s co-star, Kelsey Grammer, will witness perhaps the biggest glow-up ever with his next project, Avengers: Doomsday, in which he reprises his role as Beast from Fox’s X-Men films.
