Anna Wintour Supports Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’ Move

However, following her statements, fans are now accusing the former Vogue Editor-in-Chief of being bought by money. 

Wintour similarly sparked backlash in the past, when she was accused of choosing the new Vogue Editor in Chief, Chloe Malle, on the basis of nepotism. 

During an interview with CNN,  Anna Wintour spoke about Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos’ roles in the 2026 Met Gala. She expressed support for their decision to become primary donors in the event, noting that they would make a positive impact in the prestigious event.

“I think Lauren is going to be a wonderful asset to the museum and to the event,” she said. 

The former Vogue Editor-in-Chief praised Sanchez for her generosity and noted that, beyond her monetary involvement, her passion for costume and fashion also makes her a great addition to the event. 

“[I’m] very grateful for her incredible generosity, and she’s a great lover of costume and obviously of fashion, so we’re thrilled she’s part of the night,” she added. 

The fashion mogul’s support for Sanchez and Bezos was met with heavy criticism from fans who believe that the Amazon founder and his wife are only trying to buy their way into the fashion world. 

One fan commented, “Everyone has a price,” and another added, “So tired of Anna. So tired of the rich thinking they can buy class and style.”

A disgruntled fan argued that Wintour only supported Sanchez because they’re both wealthy, high-profile figures. The fan wrote, “The wealthy will always defend their wealthy counterparts because when they start to fall from power, they all will fall.” 

In the same vein, another fan commented, “So now it’s all about money, not anymore about fashion, style, and creativity, as we all know money does not buy style and fabulousness.”

Other fans continued to rain fire on Wintour, with some accusing her of making Vogue boring because she “doesn’t stand for anything.” One bitter fan wrote that the fashion icon “sold out for so little,” adding that she’d probably “be dining in the [White House] soon.” 

On the other hand, other fans directed their backlash at Sanchez and Bezos, accusing them of wanting to be “part of the culture so bad” that they’re buying their way into it. 

Wintour’s statements follow a recent announcement that revealed Bezos and Sanchez would contribute heavily towards the Met Gala.

Although the exact sum of their contribution was not revealed, they have been listed as primary donors for the event, per The Blast.

The theme of the 2026 Met Gala has been unveiled as “Costume Art,” and it will explore themes of transformative fashion and art. There will also be an art exhibition scheduled to kick off on May 10, 2026, and run until January 2027. 

The 2026 Met Gala will mark the first for Vogue’s newest Editor-in-Chief, Malle. 

In early September, The Blast confirmed Wintour handed over the baton to Chloe, who is the daughter of late film director Louis Malle and actress Candice Bergen.

Wintour, who has been the Vogue Editor in Chief since 1988, spoke about her decision, saying Vogue must remain “both the standard-bearer and the boundary-pushing leader.”
