Among the biggest casualties of Warner Bros.’ controversial 2021 release strategy, The Matrix Resurrections failed to recover its reported production budget theatrically, mainly because it was also made available to watch at home. A similar fate befell several of that year’s other WB movies, such as The Suicide Squad, Mortal Kombat, and Reminiscence. However, a couple of other titles — mainly Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong — were able to do well at the box office despite being released day-and-date on HBO Max. The Matrix Resurrections, however, will always be vulnerable to competition because of its relatively low haul. This week, the movie found itself being overtaken by the recently released Predator: Badlands.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, Predator: Badlands has grossed $161 million worldwide, putting it just ahead of the $160 million that The Matrix Resurrections concluded its box office run with. The fourth installment of the legendary sci-fi franchise was the first to be directed solely by Lana Wachowski, after her creative split from sister Lilly Wachowski. The movie was produced on a reported budget of $190 million, and featured Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their iconic roles as Neo and Trinity. The movie also featured Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a new version of Morpheus, alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, and Neil Patrick Harris. Unlike its predecessors, which remain among the highest-grossing sci-fi movies in history, The Matrix Resurrections is one of the biggest bombs of recent times and continued a tragic streak for Wachowski, whose last few films with her sister also tanked at the box office.
‘Predator: Badlands’ Opened to Critical Acclaim
The franchise is set to be rebooted by Drew Goddard; the studio hopes he can inject the same freshness that Trachtenberg brought to the Predator series. Trachtenberg received widespread acclaim for the 2022 film Prey, which debuted directly on Hulu. Earlier this year, he released the equally acclaimed animated spin-off, Predator: Killer of Killers. Predator: Badlands opened to excellent reviews as well, and is currently sitting at a “certified fresh” 86% critics’ score and a “verified hot” 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. You can watch the movie at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
