Delia Ephron’s tale of love, cancer, and second chances, now on Broadway

Delia Ephron's tale of love, cancer, and second chances, now on Broadway

Writer Delia Ephron, famous for rom-coms like “You’ve Got Mail,” knows how to dream up a fairy-tale storyline. But Ephron’s Broadway debut later this month comes directly from the pages of her life.

Ephron has written about intimate things before, but now it is her own life that is on the stage for everyone to see.  She said it was not easy, “because I am basically introverted.”

But she sure makes it look easy. When “Sunday Morning” first interviewed Ephron two-and-a-half years ago, she’d just finished a best-selling memoir, “Left on Tenth.” Now she’s turned that book into a play, telling her remarkable story of beating the odds. She said, “It’s the story of a woman who loses her beloved husband of 38 years, and a man from her past drops into her life and she falls madly in love. And then shortly afterwards I got diagnosed with a terrible disease, a fatal leukemia. And I survived.”

That’s right: seven years ago, because of her blood cancer, Delia Ephron was given four months to live. She’d already lost her sister, Nora, and her husband, Jerry, to cancer. But she somehow found love again, and got married in the hospital while undergoing chemo (a wedding that Dr. LaPook, a friend of Ephron, recorded).

Five-time Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman is directing the play. “It’s about second chances, and love, and life, and being brave enough to take those second chances, ’cause most people aren’t,” she said.

Stroman and Ephron share something in common they wish they didn’t. “I sadly lost my husband to AML, to leukemia,” Stroman said. “So, when I started to read the play, I knew everything about what was going on. I didn’t have to research anything, ’cause I had lived it, too.”

She said it is “tricky” to direct the play’s turns from humor, to tragedy, and back again. But it’s a trick Stroman mastered – as “Sunday Morning” watched, tagging along every step of the way, from the first meet-and-greet, to an early rehearsal, to the stage of the James Earl Jones Theatre.

Emmy Award-winner Julianna Margulies plays Ephron. “They’re saying it’s a rom-com, and it is,” Margulies said. “It’s romantic, and it’s funny, and it’s wonderful, but bring tissues, in case you need them.”

LaPook asked stage legend Peter Gallagher (who plays Peter Rutter, Ephron’s newfound love), “The play is about two people falling in love who are not in their 20s or 30s; they’re older than that. What’s the significance of that?”

“Well, you know, you’re closer to death!” Gallagher replied. “Everything is precious. And I think that’s another thing that the audience is going to recognize and feel.”

Asked about the play’s life lessons for the audience, Ephron said, “We plan our lives out as a young person: ‘Oh, I wanna get married. I wanna have children. I wanna have a career.’ You know, you make all these things. But then you don’t think, ‘Oh, what’s gonna happen to me after I’m 50? What life do I want then?’ It’s a much more open book. And this is about seizing those years and really creating something.”

“Game of Thrones” famed Iron Throne sells for $1.49 million at auction

"Game of Thrones" famed Iron Throne sells for $1.49 million at auction

“Game of Thrones” fans came out in droves to bid on hundreds of costumes, props and other items from the series in an auction that raked in over $21 million.

From Thursday through Saturday, the Heritage Auctions event in Dallas featured over 900 lots including suits of armor, swords and weapons, jewelry and several other items of significance from the HBO series.

The top-dollar item was the very thing the characters in the series vied for throughout its eight-season run: the Iron Throne. After a six-minute bidding war, the throne sold for $1.49 million.

The replica was made of plastic and molded from the original screen-used version, then finished off with metallic paint and jewel embellishments. In the series, the throne was forged with dragon breath that melted the swords of a thousand vanquished challengers and became a symbol of the struggle for power throughout the show’s run.

Heritage Auctions said in a statement Sunday that the event brought in $21.1 million from more than 4,500 bidders. The auction marked Heritage’s second-best entertainment event, just shy of the record set by a Debbie Reynolds sale it held in 2011.

Heritage Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena said in a statement he knew the auction would resonate.

“These are extraordinary treasures made by Emmy-winning costume designers and prop makers, who worked tirelessly to adapt George R.R. Martin’s wonderful novels,” Maddalena said. “People wanted a piece of that ‘Game of Thrones’ magic.”

Beyond the coveted Iron Throne, over 30 other lots commanded six-figure price tags.

Jon Snow’s signature sword, Longclaw, wielded onscreen by Kit Harington, sold for $400,000 and his night’s watch ensemble, featuring a heavy cape, went for $337,500. Both items kicked off prolonged bidding wars.

Starting bids ranged from $500 to $20,000, but several items went for thousands of dollars more. Such was the case for several cloaks and dresses worn by Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen and Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister. A gray suede ensemble worn by Daenerys sold for $112,500, exactly $100,000 over its starting bid, and the red velvet dress Cersei wears in her final appearance on the show went for $137,500, which was $122,500 over its starting bid.

Suits of armor also proved popular, especially when they included sought-after weapons. Jaime Lannister’s black-leather armor ensemble fetched $275,000 and his Kingsguard armor – including his iconic Oathkeeper longsword – went for $212,500. Queensguard armor worn by the character Gregor ‘The Mountain’ Clegane sold for $212,500.

In an interview when the auction was announced in September, Jay Roewe, HBO’s senior vice president of global incentives and production planning, said the sale speaks to the series’ staying power five years after its finale.

“‘Game of Thrones’ was a zeitgeist moment in our culture. It was a zeitgeist moment in high-end television. It was a zeitgeist moment in terms of HBO,” he said. “It’s impacted the culture.”

Hairy Bikers star Si King ‘struggling’ without co-star Dave Myers

Hairy Bikers star Si King ‘struggling’ without co-star Dave Myers

Si King has admitted he has been struggling following the death of his Hairy Bikers co-star Dave Myers earlier this year.

Myers died of cancer in February, aged 66. The pair, who were creative partners as well as best friends, fused their love of motorcycles and cooking in a series of shows, which aired across the BBC One, BBC Two, Channel 5 and Good Food.

The chef announced he had cancer in 2022 with their last show airing shortly after his death.

King, 57, said he often felt the urge to escape his grief by “heading into the sunset”, but has decided to move forward with his life as Myers would have wanted.

“I’ll be honest with you, the past few months have been a struggle,” he said in an interview with The Sunday Times.

“More than once I was on the verge of jumping on my bike and heading into the sunset.

“Not tell anyone where I was going. Just clear off and never come back.

“Other times I was raging. Raging at that bloody disease, at God and anything else I could think of. People were asking what I was going to do next.

“The answer is I am going to take some time to reflect on the life I had with my best mate, and think about moving forwards.

“Which is exactly what Dave would have wanted. Move forward, don’t dwell on the past.”

In the interview, which was published in The Observer in June, King opened up about the loss of his friend – and also the subject of what he will do next.

He ruled out the possibility of continuing Hairy Bikers without Myers.

“It can’t be the Hairy Bikers 2.0,” he said. “That’s not going to happen. It wouldn’t be respectful.”

King went on to explain that he is not only mourning the death of his friend, but also the life and career that they shared together.

“There’s obviously the sense of losing your best mate,” he said. “But there’s also a sense of loss in that the experiences we had together can’t go on.”

The TV personality said that he has only recently, three months after Myers’ death, been able to grapple with the question of what is next for him career-wise.

He emphasised the importance of having a professional partner, stating: “I need someone to play off. I’m good at unpacking people. I’m genuinely interested in people’s stories.”

Big Brother in bullying row as viewers accuse housemate of ‘cruelly belitting’ co-star

BIG Brother is involved in a brand new bullying row after viewers have accused housemates of ‘cruelly belitting’ one of their co-stars.

During last night’s episode, Ali, 38, and Khalid, 23, had a heated conversation about what happened on Friday night moments before Ryan was the first housemate to be evicted.

The forensic psychologist branded Khalid “false” in a shocking showdown.

Ali started: “Do you know what it is Khalid… I think you’re a nice boy but I find, sometimes, the interactions, I find false.

“I find that very very difficult because I don’t want to engage with it.

“Because I don’t want to play into, I don’t want to be fake with you…

“I don’t want to be like shaking your hand, hugging you, when inside I don’t buy it.”

She continued: “At the eviction, you’re sitting there yawing, acting bored, when other people are facing something stressful.

“When Iz was looking worried, you were like ‘why you looking worried, you’re not up for eviction’. I’m like that’s basic empathy.

“That’s why Iz was worried and upset.

“There’s no need for these long speeches to check up on us.”

Khalid replied: “I wanted to come speak to you tonight but I said I thought tonight would not be the right time.

“Everyone’s vibing weird with everyone. It’s weird.

‘She’s f****** annoying,’ says Big Brother’s Emma as huge feud is revealed and fans says she ‘wants her gone’

“All I wanted to do was see what it was.

“The only difference from before and after was the party, so everyone assumed it was the party. That’s not me. That’s everyone. “

Khalid then explained that he’s not as articulate as her, to which she said she didn’t want to hurt him, it’s just who she has noticed it in the most.

Strictly Come Dancing pro Katya Jones hits out at ‘nonsense’ Wynne Evans furore

Katya Jones has hit out at the ”absurd” claims about her interactions with Wynne Evans on Strictly Come Dancing.

The latest episode of the BBC competition aired on Saturday (12 October), with the results show, which sent home the third celebrity, airing the following night.

Opera singer Evans received his highest scores of the series so far, but this was outshadowed by a furore caused by videos showing his background interactions with Jones.

After the Saturday episode, a video showing Evans awkwardly placing his hand on his professional partner’s stomach, in which Jones removed it and placed it on her hip instead, went viral on social media.

Later, a separate clip was shared from viewers who noticed that Jones refused to give Evans a high five while stood behind the show’s co-host Claudia Winkleman. Jones turned her back on Evans and seemingly rolled her eyes at the opera singer.

Many fans predicted something was “off” between the pair, with some adding they felt tension – but Jones and Evans, realising there was a social media furore brewing, shut down any suggestion of a feud with a video shared online.

When this failed to end the speculation, though, Jones herself shared an additional statement, in which she said: “Happy Sunday, everyone. Now I need to make something crystal clear.

“The hand incident that happened on Saturday night was a very silly inside joke between Wynne and I, so even the idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended me in any way is complete nonsense.

“It’s quite absurd, actually. Can we focus on how brilliantly he’s doing and what an amazing dancer he’s become?’”

In the earlier video, Jones had said: “Hi everyone, it’s Wynne and Katya here. We just wanted to say, we were just messing around in the Clauditorium on Saturday night. We just wanted to say sorry. It was a silly joke.”

Evans chimed in, saying: “Yeah. Sorry.” He then wrote in the video caption: “Apologies for this tonight, we were just messing around. We really are amazing friends. The high fives [are] a running joke. Have a great evening.”

Big Brother viewers left ‘throwing up’ over Lily’s ‘gross’ habit on live TV

BIG Brother viewers have been left “throwing up” over Lily’s stomach-churning habit on live TV.

ITV viewers raced to share their “disgust” as they watched the Chinese restaurant server pick her nose and eat it.

The housemates gathered on Friday evening for the first eviction of the series.

While sitting on the sofa, Lily was seen sticking her finger up her nose in front of her fellow housemates, before eating the contents.

The “gross” moment has left fans feeling sick – with some yelling ” we didn’t need to see that ITV”.

One mortified viewer wrote: “This nose picking thing is not cute, ITV do not show us that s*** again.”

A second asked: “Is lily ok? Why would you pick your nose and eat your bogeys I’m genuinely concerned for her.”

“What grown person picks at their nose and eats it. Lily makes me feel sick,” this viewer shared.

This fan demanded: “Lilly picking her nose in front of everyone and the cameras is one thing, but eating it after?? Should be up for immediate eviction.”

Someone else echoed: “Lily needs to be evicted purely for picking her nose and eating it. Dirty cow.”

“Why do big brother need to show Lily pick her nose & eat it. F****** vile, absolutely no need to air it!”

Lily managed to revolt one of her fellow housemates while admitting to her bad habit earlier this week.

Shock moment Big Brother’s Lily and Daze break huge nomination rule during late night hot tub chat

Forensic scientist Ali, 35, was visibly horrified after learning the 20-year-old picks bogeys out of her nose and eats them.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one fan complained: “Nahhhh it’s knocking me sick them talking about bogeys.”

Another added: “I’ve gone off Lily. She really needs to grow up, and she’s getting babied. Admitting to picking her nose is disgusting.”

A third said: “I am Ali in this scenario, that is disgusting Lily.”

And someone else even asked: “Do you think Lily picks her nose when she’s working at the Chinese takeaway?”

Lily’s grim admission came after she sniffed her slippers while talking to Ali and Daze.

“Do we need to have a little conversation about shoe hygiene?” Ali asked her.

Lily replied: “I think hygiene in general, maybe? I picked my nose and I showed it…”

Daze told Ali: “She picks her nose – like a big bogey, a big one, chunky. And she goes…”

The activist then demonstrated how Lily puts her bogey-covered finger in her mouth.

Daze continued: “She eats the whole thing.” Looking revolted, Ali replied: “Stop that.”

Lily then turned the tables and asked Ali what she does with her bogeys.

She flatly replied: “Blow my nose. I try to clean my nose quite regularly so they don’t build up.”

This is the second time in 24 hours that fans have found themselves feeling queasy while watching the show.

Nathan King, a pork salesman and one time butler to the King, got stomachs churning on Thursday night’s episode.

Big Brother fans beg bosses to step in and evict contestant after ‘sexist’ comment

BIG Brother fans have called for Marcello to get the boot after making a ‘sexist’ comment.

The housemates were told they wouldn’t be allowed hot water today after a series of rule breaks, which sparked debate about how people would wash.

Marcello was quick to turn his nose up at some of the girls who said they planned to wash with wet wipes.

But he said he wouldn’t be taking a cold shower and told them: “Men are supposed to be stinking.”

Those watching at home were once again were shocked by his comments and have called for show bosses to evict him.

One person raged: “Please get this sexist t*** out of the house bro wyd.”

A second added: “The misogynist continues..He needs told to shut the f*** up.”

And a  third commented: “Get Marcello OUT!! Everything about him is so cringe.”

“Marcello saying “ew” at Emma but then saying he’s not going to shower because “boys are meant to be stinky” get this man off my TV,” added another unhappy viewer.

Last week viewers once again begged for Marcello to leave after Big Brother aired secret footage of him and Ali.

Normally the ITV2 show does not air any scenes of the housemates in the smoking area, but  bosses broke that rule to show the context of a bizarre comment he made.

In the clip Marcello is seen offering Ali his vape, suggesting she try the grape flavour.

Big Brother fans demand producers step in after airing secret footage of Ali and Marcello ‘kiss’ scene

After taking a toke, she handed it back to him, and he told her: “We just vape kissed.”

“Marcello!” a shock Ali scolded.

“It’s a thing!” he responded, flirtily.

“It’s not a thing,” she shot back, laughing awkwardly. “It;s definitely not a thing.”

While Marcello then reassured her he was joking, when they went back to join the group, he let the joke continue.

“We just kissed innit,” he told Sarah, Segun and Hanah, before quickly adding: “No, I’m joking.”

After Sarah scolded him, Ali went inside and confessed to her fellow housemates that she was concerned the smoking scene would not be shown – therefore her girlfriend watching at home might believe Marcello that they kissed.
