Edward Norton’s Forgotten, R-Rated Comedy Thriller Is A Killer Case Of Mistaken Identity

Not only do twins look and sound alike, it’s said they often act alike and even make similar life choices, regardless of how far apart their lives drift. 2009’s Leaves of Grass, starring Edward Norton in a dual role, pushes that idea to its most absurd extreme. When its long-awaited family reunion goes sideways almost immediately, the film spirals into a hazy comedy of errors that has no business being as funny, or as sharp, as it is.
Thanks to its extremely limited theatrical release, Leaves of Grass was a box office disaster, pulling in just over $1 million against a reported $9 million budget. Despite that blink-and-you-missed-it rollout, the film earned high praise from critics willing to give it a shot. Roger Ebert famously gave the Tim Blake Nelson film four out of four stars, calling it a “sweet, wacky masterpiece,” and it’s hard not to see his point. Norton fires on all cylinders, twice, and his ability to convincingly play off himself turns what could have been a gimmick into something genuinely engaging, especially if you’re a fan of his earlier work and somehow missed this one entirely.
The Ultimate Odd Couple Outing
Leaves of Grass first introduces Bill Kincaid (Edward Norton) by putting his pristine life front and center. A respected professor of classical philosophy at Brown University, Bill is the definition of academic prestige. His published work has given him serious clout in his field, he’s articulate to a fault, and his female students openly adore him, which causes more problems than he seems prepared to deal with. Still, the point is clear. Bill has built his entire identity around intellect, discipline, and distance from the chaotic upbringing he left behind.
That distance becomes even more apparent once we meet his identical twin brother, Brady (Edward Norton, but a lot shaggier looking). Living in Oklahoma, Brady is every bit as intelligent as Bill, but he’s applied that intelligence in a very different direction. Instead of chasing degrees and tenure, he’s become a hydroponic farming savant with a thriving pot operation. Unfortunately, that operation was funded by local drug lord Pug Rothbaum (Richard Dreyfuss), and Brady’s profits haven’t yet caught up with his debts. He owes a dangerous amount of money to someone who is not known for patience, pushing Leaves of Grass’ conflict front and center.
After faking his own death, Brady has his business partner Rick Bolger (Tim Blake Nelson) call Bill to deliver the news at the worst possible moment. Bill is on the cusp of a major professional promotion and wants nothing to do with Brady, or with their mother Daisy (Susan Sarandon), whose fast-and-loose approach to life never provided him with anything resembling stability as a child. That instability is what pushed Bill into academia in the first place, determined to become the exact opposite of the family he grew up with.
Things truly kick off in Leaves of Grass once Bill learns why he was summoned home. Brady intends to violently confront Pug, but needs an airtight alibi for when things inevitably go south. Since Bill and Brady are identical twins, the plan is deceptively simple. Bill is to pose as Brady while visiting their mother at her retirement home, while Brady takes advantage of Bill’s public visibility to move freely while committing a string of illegal acts. During this wildly reckless setup, Bill catches the attention of Janet (Keri Russell), a writer and intellectual who just so happens to be one of Brady’s closest friends, while also checking every box someone like Bill would be drawn to in a romantic partner.
A Pitch Black Comedy Of Errors
Leaves of Grass works as well as it does because of how completely Edward Norton commits to both halves of the equation. Bill is rigid, cautious, and desperate to keep his past at arm’s length. Brady is impulsive, reckless, and brilliant in his own way, but disproportionately confident in his ability to outmaneuver the wrong people. Watching Bill get dragged back into his hometown’s criminal underbelly forces him to reconcile his polished, high-status life with the chaos he thought he’d permanently escaped.
One brother is too stoned on his own supply to ever make the right judgment call, and the other is too risk-averse to do what needs to be done when family is on the line. Norton’s heightened exchanges with himself land far better than expected because he understands the sibling dynamic and leans into it completely. The constant bickering between Bill and Brady feels eerily authentic, especially if you’ve grown up getting into trouble with your own siblings. They’re both functional adults at this point in their lives, but they’re still brothers, and they still tattle to their mother whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Leaves of Grass is one of those overlooked gems that deserves a second look for its escalating absurdity, its far-fetched yet oddly grounded story beats, and, most importantly, Edward Norton’s strange and compelling chemistry with Edward Norton. It’s an excellent example of rising chaos and sudden deescalation, anchored by characters who feel believable even when the circumstances spiral completely out of control.

In each timeline the series explores, Graham emerges as a mysterious and all-knowing character, one that soon becomes the prime suspect in multiple timeframes. Graham’s wicked performance, coupled with incredible writing and a talented cast, make the series not only a must-watch, but one of Netflix’s best shows to date.
What Is ‘Bodies’ About?
Based on the DC Vertigo graphic novel, Bodies follows four detectives in separate eras as they investigate the same man’s body after they’re all found in the same spot in London. Alfred Hillinghead (Andor’s Kyle Soller) investigates in the late Victorian era of 1890, Charles Whiteman (The Queen’s Gambit’s Jacob Fortune-Lloyd) works to solve the mystery during World War II in 1941, Shahara Hasan (Amaka Okafor) works the case in the 2023 present, and Iris Maplewood (Shira Haas) is assigned to the case in a dystopian future in 2053. Shahara is the first detective to find the otherworldly connection between the cases, and quickly realizes that the secret to getting the mystery solved is to find ways to communicate across time.
The series then jumps across four time periods and sees each of the detectives attempting to solve the same murder to varying degrees of success. So, in addition to exploring the sci-fi element of time-travel and defying the laws of space and time, the series is also a heavy and addictive whodunit, with hundreds of rabbit holes and shady suspects. Speaking of, Graham plays the formidable villain Elias Mannix in each of the timelines. In the Victorian era, Elias goes by Jullian Harker, a wealthy man whose mother holds seances. In the dystopian future, he leads the group ruling Britain. In 2023, he’s a troubled teen played by Gabriel Howell. With all that said, Bodies reaches a rare feat by perfectly balancing multiple genres as a murder mystery, period piece, and family drama all rolled into one.
‘Bodies’ Uses Separate Timeframes to Explore Prejudice and Oppression
While the synopsis alone might have viewers eager to press play, Bodies‘ relevance only increases when looking at the detective’s personal lives too. Like any good detective show, the series is about much more than the case at hand, and explores the detective behind it too. And, this time around, there are four detectives to dive into.
With each of the characters, Bodies highlights an oppressed minority of the time. Hillinghead is a closeted gay man fearful of the prejudice around him, Whiteman is a Jewish man hiding his true background during World War II, Hasan is a Muslim woman dealing with the xenophobia of current-day England, and Maplewood lives in a tyrannical future. Despite having such different backgrounds, the show uses a sci-fi premise to portray oppression in multiple ways, showing not only how harmful hate can be in its many forms, but how different people can respond and retaliate at the center of it.
With a sci-fi time-travel element, and a mysterious and mind-bending whodunit driving the story, Bodies is one of Netflix’s most interesting and experimental shows. By blending so many genres into one, while still exploring the heartfelt and emotional personal lives of the four detectives, the eight-episode miniseries sets itself apart and becomes one of Netflix’s most underappreciated titles. At its heart, the series is all about using empathy and connection to get to the bottom of the truth, and viewers are at the edge of their seats throughout the journey to find it.

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Mikayla Matthews appears to be addressing the drama surrounding one of MomTok’s biggest members.
After news broke that production on season 5 of the hit Hulu reality show has been paused following a domestic assault investigation into costar Taylor Frankie Paul, Mikayla seemingly acknowledged the headlines in a social media post.
It all began when Mikayla joined Mayci Neeley to address recent online rumors that the pair are dating.
“Honestly one of the better rumors I’ve heard about myself the last couple days lol😚🥰😏,” Mikayla wrote via Instagram on Monday, May 16. Mayci added, “Who said it was a rumor👀.”

Mikayla, however, had a different point of view.

The comments come after news broke of an alleged domestic dispute between Taylor and her on-again, off-again partner, Dakota Mortensen. A Draper City Police Department spokesperson confirmed to Us Weekly on Monday that a “domestic assault investigation” involving the former couple is ongoing.
A source also exclusively shared with Us that the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives cast is “honestly terrified to film with Taylor right now” and revealed that the women “have made it clear they don’t want to be around her because they see her as a major liability.”
Although the insider noted that prior to the incident, the cast “believed Taylor was in a better place” after she filmed her season of The Bachelorette, the reality star’s latest incident has raised some concern in the MomTok circle.
“Now, many of them feel they’ve moved past the point of dealing with this kind of behavior and simply don’t want to be put in that position again,” the source claimed.

Movies are widely accessible to many, but that is not the case for Pratt and Schwarzenegger’s children, as they shared per E! Online.
The “Parks and Recreation” alum revealed that not only have he and his wife’s children, Lyla, 5, Eloise, 3, and Ford, 16 months, never watched his movies, but they have never watched any films at all.
“My 5-year-old, my 3-year-old, and my 1-year-old have never seen movies,” he detailed, describing his wife as old-school. “Katherine is very old-school when it comes to screens and technology and all of that stuff. So, we’re waiting.”

In an article with a video published on March 17, HELLO! caught up with Cruz as he was walking down the street and asked him whether he had spoken to Brooklyn amid the ongoing tensions in their family. Cruz kept his head down while walking, seemingly ignoring the question.
He was then asked whether he was hoping to repair their relationship. After a few strides, he looked up and said, “Hope to.”
Cruz is in the middle of his “mini tour” and will be heading to Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, and London for the rest of March.

Generations of sci-fi fans waited for Dune to finally be recognized as one of the greatest sci-fi epics in history. Frank Herbert’s grand vision was deemed unfilmable, unadaptable, and incomprehensible for the average movie-goer. That’s why the reveal of Dune: Part Three is so stunning. The story of the second novel, Dune Messiah, is coming to theaters. It’s being marketed as the conclusion of the Dune trilogy, which is odd, as in the books, it’s the end of the prologue to the real story yet to come.
Dune: Part Three Brings Dune Messiah To Life
After the events of Dune: Part Two, Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) is seen in the teaser trailer as the leader of the Fremen, accepting his role as their Messiah, the Muad’Dib, while his lover Chani (Zendaya) appears to be pregnant. The teaser doesn’t reveal if it’s a boy or a girl, but what the brief two minutes and 30 seconds of footage does reveal is Paul’s doubts about being the Messiah. In the best line of the teaser, his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) reminds Paul that his father “didn’t start any wars.”
Dune: Part Three is again going to be full of amazing special effects, gorgeous shots of Arakkis, and even more all-out wars between the Fremen and everyone who wants them dead. Which, as it turns out, is everyone else. Towards the end of the trailer, we hear Paul say he’s not afraid to die, not yet, as what looks like the biggest explosion yet goes off right in front of him.
A Darker Story Than It Looks
Those who have read the books are excited that Dune: Part Three looks, amazingly, to contain the major plot beats of the novel. If Denis Villeneuve and Brian K. Vaughn’s script sticks to Frank Herbert’s masterpiece, this is going to be a dark, but very satisfying movie that’s not going to go the way fans of the films will expect. The trailer looks like it’s front-loading the battle scenes, but as with every Dune film, it’s the political intrigue and philosophical discussion that’s going to eat up most of the running time.
Joining the cast for Dune: Part Three is Robert Pattinson, as the Tleilaxu Face Dancer, Scytale, another role that’s going to remind people that playing Edward in Twilight was the odd role out for one of Hollywood’s strangest leading men. The returning Florence Pugh, as Paul’s wife Irulan, and Anna Taylor-Joy as his sister, Alia, will get substantially more to do in the third movie. Jason Momoa, who brings to life Duncan Idaho, will also get a lot more screen time now that he’s overcome the small problem of being dead.
The Last Dune Movie Because Studios Are Cowards
There’s a lot to unpack in just over two minutes of footage, and book readers can already pick out key scenes that have made the jump to the big screen, but it’s the marketing for Dune: Part Three that’s revealing a whole lot. We knew Denis Villeneuve was only to make three movies, but again, the original series is six novels, with Dune and Dune Messiah becoming mere footnotes by the time of the fourth novel, God-Emperor of Dune. No studio will ever adapt that particular novel about a human/sandworm hybrid galactic tyrant ruling for thousands of years as he brings humanity to his grand vision, “The Golden Path.”
All of that is to say that Dune: Part Three, referred to as the end of the trilogy, is going to be as far as Hollywood goes into Frank Herbert’s universe. This is the final time we’ll get to see Villeneuve’s vision for Arakkis, and in a landscape devoid of smart sci-fi, it might be the last great sci-fi blockbuster of this decade.
