Glen Powell Prunes the Family Tree in Darkly Comedic First Trailer for His New A24 Thriller

After fighting for his life in Edgar Wright‘s take on The Running Man, Glen Powell is about to go from hunted to hunter. The first trailer for his new darkly comedic A24 thriller, How to Make a Killing, has been released, casting the Twisters star as Beckett, a charming member of the wealthy Redfellow family who is in line as a potential heir to their fortune. Unfortunately for Beckett, however, there are seven family members above him on the inheritance totem pole, and all of them have gotten to enjoy a life of luxury while he’s been stuck trying to get by through honest, blue-collar work. Now, he’s done waiting, and he’s ready to get his money and get even with his relatives by any means necessary in theaters in February.

Although the trailer initially opens with Beckett being asked what he’d do with a billion dollars and imagining himself accepted among the elites, everything quickly comes crashing back to reality when he explains his backstory. His mother was disowned by the Redfellows, meaning he, too, was shunned by the family from the moment he was born. However, he was still instilled with the idea that he and his mom were different and that he’d have to be ready to inherit that fortune one day, after years of toiling away selling suits to people who are actually rich. When he runs into an old friend, played by Margaret Qualley, who jokes that he should call after he kills them all, he decides to take it literally and finally take out all seven “rich pricks” between him and the billions in the family’s coffers. Cue a boating “accident” that drags one of the heirs to a watery grave, kicking off a string of killings that begins Beckett’s rise up the financial ladder, finally garnering some recognition from the Redfellows. It also attracts the wrong kind of attention from the law, but he’s determined to take out each of the eccentric ghouls in front of him, no matter what complications he may face.

Formerly titled Huntington, How to Make a Killing is a modern-day spin on the 1949 British dark comedy classic, Kind Hearts and Coronets, which followed a man murdering his way through his family to claim their dukedom. Where that film had Star Wars legend Alec Guinness playing all eight victims, however, Powell will have plenty of big names to take down throughout the film’s runtime. Joining him and Qualley in the feature are Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, and Ed Harris.

‘How to Make a Killing’ Gives Glen Powell His First A24 Movie

Powell has been just about everywhere since blowing up on the Tom Cruise-led Top Gun: Maverick, taking on rom-coms with Anyone But You, sizzling opposite Adria Arjona in the crime comedy Hit Man, and chasing danger in the blockbuster Twisters. Although he isn’t starring, he’s also set to help decide the future of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise as a producer. One thing he hadn’t done until How to Make a Killing, however, is work with A24 as an actor. The prestigious indie banner’s latest was directed by John Patton Ford, who earned plenty of acclaim for his Audrey Plaza-led directorial debut, Emily the Criminal. For his first rodeo under the company, Powell appears to be in good hands with a story that plays to his natural charisma with a bit more black comedy to play around with.
