Harry Potter’s OG Ron Weasley Speaks Out for First Time on HBO Series
“I’m unlikely to ever step out of Ron Weasley’s shadow,” Grint admitted. “I’m fine with that. I think it’s great. I love meeting people who really felt this was part of their childhood.”
But Grint also made a point of looking to help with the next generation. The actor revealed he personally wrote a letter to Alastair Stout, the 11-year-old who will take over the role of Ron in HBO’s long-form adaptation.
“I wrote him a letter, before they started, passing the baton as it were. It was really just wishing him all the best. I had so much fun stepping into this world, and I hope he has the same experience. It took me straight back to when Dan, Emma, and I were cast. I still remember every second of it. I see a bit of family resemblance.”
Did Rupert Grint Enjoy Harry Potter?
Grint didn’t downplay what the franchise meant to him. Cast as Ron at age 11, he described the experience as “crazy.”
“I was a huge fan of the books, so for me it was like stepping into the books,” he said. “It changed my whole life quite quickly.”
Since his wizarding days, Grint has appeared in projects like Servant (Apple TV) and Into the White, while staying rooted in his North London community with partner Georgia Groome and their daughters. But even as he’s moved on, he embraces the legacy.
“I don’t think I’ll ever quite step out of his shadow, but I’m fine with that,” he said. “It gives me a lot of pride.”
Grint is “intrigued” to see what HBO’s adaptation becomes. “I think it’s great that it’s a whole new thing. It’s going to be its own thing,” he said.
HBO’s Harry Potter series is targeting a 2027 release and stars Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Arabella Stanton (Hermione), and Alastair Stout (Ron) — with Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod leading the creative team.
