Actress Kirstie Alley, star of the big and small screens known for her Emmy-winning role on “Cheers” and films like “Look Who’s Talking,” has died after a brief battle with cancer, her children True and Lillie Parker announced on her social media.

She was 71.

“We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered,” the statement read.

“She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead,” the family’s statement continued. “As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.”

“Our mother’s zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did,” the statement said.

A representative for Alley confirmed to CNN via email on Tuesday that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer prior to her death.

A two-time Primetime Emmy Award winner, Alley was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1951.

After a standout role in 1982’s “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” she played roles in movies like 1984’s “Blind Date” and 1987’s “Summer School” opposite Mark Harmon.

That same year, Alley would follow Shelley Long to play the lead opposite Ted Danson in the latter part of TV classic sitcom “Cheers,” which premiered in 1982. Alley first appeared in 1987, playing strong and independent bar manager Rebecca Howe, staying on the acclaimed show until it ended in 1993.

After winning the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series in 1991 for “Cheers” and another for lead actress in a miniseries or special for 1994’s “David’s Mother,” she again found TV success in the late ’90s with series “Veronica’s Closet,” which scored her another Emmy nod.

Additionally, Alley starred in a number of memorable films, like the “Look Who’s Talking” movies, 1990’s “Madhouse” and 1999’s “Drop Dead Gorgeous” with Ellen Barkin.

In 2005, Alley co-wrote and starred in the Showtime comedy “Fat Actress” before making a foray into reality TV.

She appeared in “Kirstie Alley’s Big Life” in 2010, was a contestant on Season 12 of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” the next year and placed second on Season 22 of the British version of “Celebrity Big Brother” in 2018. In 2022, she competed in Season 7 of Fox’s “The Masked Singer.”

Though she had an impressive body of work, the later part of her career was marked by Alley’s penchant for stirring controversy, especially through social media.

In a 2007 interview, Alley said she was proud of her no holds barred ways.

“I’ve always felt like if someone asks me something, they want the real answer,” Alley told Good Housekeeping. “I think there’s also something about being from Kansas. Usually people think I’m from New York. The only similarity between New Yorkers and Midwesterners is that what you see is what you get.”

John Travolta, who costarred with Alley in 1989’s hit “Look Who’s Talking” as well as two sequels, wrote on Instagram on Monday, “Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had. I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again.”

Jamie Lee Curtis – who worked with Alley in 2016 on episodes of TV’s “Scream Queens” – shared a statement on Facebook to pay tribute to the late actress, writing, “She was a great comic foil in @tvscreamqueens and a beautiful mama bear in her very real life. She helped me buy onesies for my family that year for Christmas. We agreed to disagree about some things but had a mutual respect and connection. Sad news.”

Josh Gad tweeted, “My heart breaks for Kirstie and her family. Whether it was her brilliance in ‘Cheers; or her magnetic performance in the ‘Look Who’s Talking’ franchise, her smile was always infectious, her laugh was always contagious and her charisma was always iconic. RIP.”

Alley’s “Cheers” co-star Ted Danson told Deadline he had just watched Alley in an episode of the show while on a plane before learning of her death.

“I was on a plane today and did something I rarely do. I watched an old episode of ‘Cheers,’” Danson told the outlet. “It was the episode where Tom Berenger proposes to Kirstie, who keeps saying no, even though she desperately wants to say yes. Kirstie was truly brilliant in it. Her ability to play a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown was both moving and hysterically funny.”

“She made me laugh 30 years ago when she shot that scene, and she made me laugh today just as hard. As I got off the plane, I heard that Kirstie had died. I am so sad and so grateful for all the times she made me laugh,” Danson added. “I send my love to her children. As they well know, their mother had a heart of gold. I will miss her.”

Another “Cheers” star, Rhea Perlman, told CNN in a statement that she and Alley became friends instantly on the set of “Cheers.”

“Kirstie was a unique and wonderful person and friend. Her joy of being was boundless,” Perlman said. “We became friends almost instantly when she joined the cast of Cheers. She loved kids and my kids loved her too. We had sleepovers at her house, with treasure hunts that she created. She had massive Halloween and Easter parties and invited the entire crew of the show and their families. She wanted everyone to feel included. She loved her children deeply. I’ve never met anyone remotely like her. I feel so thankful to have known her. I’m going to miss her very, very much.”

“Baywatch” actor Parker Stevenson, who was married to Alley from 1983 to 1997 and is the father of her two children, also paid tribute to her on social media. In an Instagram post, confirmed to be Stevenson’s by a representative for the actor, he wrote: “Kirstie, I am so grateful for our years together, and for the two incredibly beautiful children and now grandchildren that we have. You will be missed.”

Tom Hanks Solves a ‘National Treasure’-Style Mystery on Free Streaming Next Month

Published

on

Before every streaming service had its own globe-trotting puzzle thriller, there was The Da Vinci Code — the movie that turned symbology into blockbuster spectacle. And now, nearly two decades after it dominated theaters, Tom Hanks’ mystery juggernaut is heading to free streaming on Tubi next month.

If you’ve been craving something in the National Treasure lane — secret societies, ancient clues, historical conspiracies — this is your chaotic, slightly more serious option. Although, please be warned, it is not as good as it should have been. The film also stars Audrey Tautou as Sophie Neveu, Ian McKellen as Sir Leigh Teabing, Jean Reno as Captain Bezu Fache, Paul Bettany as Silas, and Alfred Molina as Bishop Aringarosa.

While National Treasure leaned into swashbuckling fun, The Da Vinci Code plays it straight — moody lighting, heavy themes, and a tone that insists this is Very Serious Business, and yet, that intensity is part of the appeal. It commits to its mystery. It treats every clue like a seismic revelation. It moves briskly, even when the exposition gets dense.

Was ‘The Da Vinci Code’ Successful?

Hanks pushed back against criticism in an interview with the Evening Standard, saying, “We always knew there would be a segment of society that would not want this movie to be shown. But the story we tell is loaded with all sorts of hooey and fun kind of scavenger-hunt-type nonsense. If you are going to take any sort of movie at face value, particularly a huge-budget motion picture like this, you’d be making a very big mistake.” Hanks reprised his role in two sequels — Angels & Demons, which made nearly $500 million globally, and Inferno, which tanked with just over $200 million worldwide. The franchise was rebooted for television with a show titled The Lost Symbol. Inferno in particular was spectacularly bad.

Collider’s review stated that Inferno doubled down on everything that made the previous Robert Langdon films so exhausting, delivering a messy, joyless thriller that felt creatively bankrupt from the jump:

“It’s almost like Dan Brown looked at Indiana Jones and thought, ‘Yeah, I like what he does, but I hate that he has a personality. Also, if he could mansplain everything to a female sidekick, that would be a plus.’”

The Da Vinci Code will begin streaming for free on Tubi from March 1.

William Shatner Warned Everyone Of The Dangers Of AI In The 60s

William Shatner Warned Everyone Of The Dangers Of AI In The 60s

By Jonathan Klotz
| Published

Science fiction has been warning us about the dangers of seemingly helpful technological innovations for over a hundred years. Even before computers were found in every home and in our pockets, overreliance on technology has been a common theme, including in the legendary anthology series, The Twilight Zone.

“Nick of Time” was released on November 18, 1960, and while it’s about a man’s dependence on a cheap fortune-telling novelty toy, it still works. 66 years later, in the era of ChatGPT and AI language models that are all too willing to provide advice.

William Shatner’s Choice Paralysis

“Nick of Time” stars William Shatner as Don Carter and Patricia Breslin (future wife of Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell) as Pat Carter, newlyweds stuck in a small town in the middle of Ohio, when they come across a cheap fortune-telling novelty machine in the booth of a roadside diner. Don plays with the machine by asking it if he’ll get a promotion when he gets the affirmative response, “It has been decided in your favor.” One call to New York later, Don realizes he got the promotion, and his fascination with the tabletop trinket quickly becomes an obsession.

Don continues asking questions to the devil-topped fortune-teller and receives inane generic responses, from “that makes a good deal of sense,” to “the answer to that is obvious,” and of course, “try again.” Paralyzed by indecision without the guidance from the fortune-teller, Don remains trapped in the booth, waiting for an answer to the question, “Where should we live?” Unlike most episodes of The Twilight Zone, Pat breaks her husband free from his obsession, and they leave town, but the ending shows another couple, trapped, unable to leave until the fortune-telling machine says they can.

The unsubtle message of “Nick of Time” is the importance of human connection over a machine. The Twilight Zone has stood the test of time because of the universal morals at the heart of its twisted stories. 50 years later, Her told a similar story of a man becoming infatuated with a machine, and Ex Machina added a new wrinkleby giving the machine a human form. The AI in both movies is far, far more advanced than a penny fortune-teller, but the end result, obsession, decision paralysis, a loss of human connection, it’s all the same.

The Twilight Zone Is A Timeless Classic For A Reason

William Shatner went on to star in another, better-remembered episode of The Twilight Zone, “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” and a little show you may have heard of called Star Trek. His overacting has been parodied for decades, but as both of his appearances in Rod Serling’s masterpiece show, when asked to play a man slowly losing his mind, there’s no one better.

The Twilight Zone is still one of the greatest shows of all time, and episodes like “Nick of Time” prove why no amount of reboots and revivals can match the simple effectiveness of the original. In 1960, no one imagined that we’d eventually have an app on our phones that acts exactly like the devil-head fortune-teller from the episode, but it doesn’t matter. The early horror sci-fi series could have been talking about television, computers, or telephones, and its point would still land: don’t let technology rule your life. Though today, a character would come right out and say, “go touch grass.”

Whew! Barack Obama is weighing in on the wild world of social media and public discourse, and it looks like President Donald Trump might’ve sparked another round of online chaos. Across social media, folks were reacting in full force after a controversial clip involving the Obama’s made its way across timelines. And now, the former POTUS is finally speaking out.

Obama Stays Unbothered Amid Trump Drama

In a recent interview on ‘No Lie with Brian Tyler Cohen,’ former POTUS Barack Obama didn’t hold back when discussing social media controversy, indirectly addressing a viral video on former President Donald Trump’s Truth Social. He called out the loss of shame and decorum in public behavior, saying, “And what is true is that there doesn’t seem to be any shame about this among people who used to feel like you had to have some sort of decorum and a sense of propriety and respect for the office.” Additionally, Obama reflected on the contrast between the online chaos and the everyday kindness he still sees across the country.

He also shared these thoughts during the podcast conversation, noting that while the social media “clown show” chaos “gets attention” and serves as a distraction, it doesn’t reflect the majority of Americans. While traveling around the U.S., he still meets people who “still believe in decency, courtesy, and kindness,” Obama shared. Furthermore, he emphasized that even amid the online madness, him and Michelle remain unbothered and steadfast.

The Roomies Didn’t Come To Play On This One

As soon as the clip dropped, folks ran straight to TSR’s Instagram comment section, praising Obama for being a class act. Meanwhile, a few cheekily asked when is he going to say “it’s on sight” to Trump. And, of course, many just admitted they miss the days of him in office.

One Instagram user @frog_ismynickname said, “When President Obama speaks… we listen. 🎤🙌”

This Instagram user @theamyyedit shared, “I miss having an articulate, well mannered president 🥹”

And, Instagram user @_lavishlifechi added, “Very classy and well spoken …. my FOREVER president 😌”

Meanwhile, Instagram user @kissesfromkayy wrote, “Hearing his voice is comforting and reassuring 🥺🤎”

While Instagram user @spoken_highly commented, “Greatly Put Mr.President 🫡”

Finally, Instagram user @sirramoan said, “a part of me wishes he’d be like ‘look, he knows when he sees me it’s on sight’

The Video That Had Everyone Talking

As previously reported, the offensive clip in question crudely depicted Barack and Michelle Obama as apes and sparked immediate outrage across the political spectrum. Democrats, Republicans, and senior GOP members like Senator Tim Scott condemned it, with Scott calling it “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.” The White House initially dismissed the backlash as “fake outrage” before blaming a staffer and eventually deleting the post.

Search for Savannah Guthrie’s Mom Nancy Guthrie Could Take ‘Years’: Sheriff

Published

on

Authorities are shedding light on a potential timeline into the ongoing investigation surrounding Savannah Guthrie’s mom Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told The New York Times on Friday, February 13, that investigators are still “looking hard,” with about 400 people on the case. While he is certain that the team will find Nancy and her abductor, he noted he’s unsure of when that will happen.

“Maybe it’s an hour from now,” Nanos said of the search. “Maybe it’s weeks or months or years from now. But we won’t quit. We’re going to find Nancy. We’re going to find this guy.”

News broke on February 1 that Nancy had been reported missing by a family member who called 911. (Nancy shared daughters Savannah and Annie Guthrie and son Camron Guthrie with Charles Guthrie, who died in 1988 after a heart attack.)

The search to find Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother, Nancy Guthrie, is “a race against time,” according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. Nanos appeared during the Tuesday, February 3, broadcast of the Today show and said he hopes “that window hasn’t closed” as the investigation into 84-year-old Nancy’s disappearance continues. “We took some samples that […]

As the search continues, multiple SWAT, forensics officers and law enforcement vehicles were spotted in Nancy’s neighborhood on Friday, according to CNN and NewsNation. CNN reported that police officers converged on two locations but did not make any arrests. Authorities did question a man about his apparent involvement, but he was ultimately released.

“We may see a couple more of these as this goes on,” CNN Chief Law Enforcement and Intelligence Analyst John Miller told the outlet, speculating the case will likely move fast since there’s a “victim in the balance.” He added, “I think we saw that again last night, but this particular lead is not going to go any further.”

A representative for the Sheriff’s department also confirmed that there had been “law enforcement activity” in the area on Friday related to Nancy’s potential kidnapping case.

“Because this is a joint investigation, at the request of the FBI, no additional information is currently available,” the statement read via X. “There is no press briefing scheduled for tonight regarding the Nancy Guthrie investigation.”

Savannah, meanwhile, has been absent from the Today show since her mom’s disappearance but has issued several public pleas to “bring her home.” In a February 4 Instagram video, Savannah and her siblings shared a personal message to Nancy.

“Mommy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman. You are God’s precious daughter, Nancy,” Savannah said at the time. “We believe and know that even in this valley, He is with you. Everyone is looking for you, Mommy, everywhere. We will not rest.”

Annie added, “Nancy is our mother, we are her children. She is our beacon. She holds fast to joy and all of life’s circumstances. She chooses joy day after day despite having already passed through great trials of pain and grief. We are always going to be merely human. Just normal human people who need our mom. Mama, if you’re listening, we need you to come home. We miss you.”

Days later, Savannah shared home videos with Nancy. “Our lovely mom. 💛,” she wrote via Instagram on Thursday, February 12. “We will never give up on her. Thank you for your prayers and hope.”
