Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet almost didn’t to star in ‘Titanic’

CNN
 —

James Cameron is sharing some surprising details from the making of his blockbuster hit “Titanic,” which celebrates 25 years of being released next month.

In a new video interview with GQ, the iconic director revealed that he almost didn’t end up casting Leonardo DiCaprio or Kate Winslet – his two romantic leads whose careers as major Hollywood movie stars were cemented by the landmark Oscar-winning film.

While considering actors to play the roles of his star-crossed lovers on the doomed ocean liner, Cameron explained that he was initially thinking of someone like Gwyneth Paltrow for Rose, and that while Winslet had been proposed as an option, he was afraid she was too much of a typecast.

“I actually didn’t see Kate at first,” he said in the video. “She had done a couple of other historical dramas as well, and she was getting a reputation as ‘Corset Kate’ doing historical stuff.” (It is true that “The Reader” actress’s three credits prior to “Titanic” were also period costume dramas – “Sense and Sensibility” in 1995, followed by “Jude” and “Hamlet” one year later.)

Cameron went on to say that he was afraid that putting Winslet in the role “was going to look like the laziest casting in the world,” but that he nonetheless agreed to meet her in the end. Of course, he thought she was “fantastic,” and the rest is history.

With DiCaprio, meanwhile, there were some initial hiccups.

After an initial “hysterical” meeting with the heartthrob actor, in which all the women in the production office somehow ended up in the conference room alongside Cameron, DiCaprio was invited back for a screen test with Winslet, who had already been cast at that point.

But when the “Romeo + Juliet” star came in, he was surprised to learn he’d have to read lines and be filmed alongside Winslet to gauge their chemistry on camera.

“He came in, he thought it was another meeting to meet Kate,” Cameron described.

He remembered telling the pair, “We’ll just run some lines, and I’ll video it.”

But then DiCaprio – who by then had led several movies and scored an Oscar nomination for 1993’s “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” – informed Cameron, “You mean I’m reading?…I don’t read,” meaning that he no longer submitted to having to audition for film roles.

Without missing a beat, Cameron extended his hand to the star and and told him, “Well, thanks for coming by.”

The director then explained to DiCaprio the enormity of the project before them, how the film was going to take two years out of his life, and how he was “not going to f**k it up by making the wrong decision in casting.”

“So you’re going to read or you’re not going to get the part,” Cameron said he told the young actor.

DiCaprio reluctantly submitted, to his credit.

Cameron remembered how the actor “lit up” and “became Jack,” creating electric chemistry with Winslet later seen plainly in the film itself.

“Titanic” sailed into theaters on December 19, 1997 and eventually went on to win 11 Academy Awards, including best director for Cameron.

25 Years Later, a ‘Firefly’ Revival Is a Worse Idea Than You Think

Published

on

Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm 'Mal' Reynoldsand Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra in FIREFLY

Nobody panic. The Firefly revival (at least, in animated form) is real. Well…real enough that Nathan Fillion announced it at Awesome Con last week, flanked by most of the show’s original cast, which included Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau. The whole event appeared to be a very shiny reunion for people who cannot stop reliving the year 2002, and the response online was, predictably, enthusiastic. Like, to an unhinged degree, which makes sense because it came from a fanbase that has spent twenty-something years in a state of dignified grief, keeping a cancelled space-western alive through sheer willpower, convention panels, and matching tattoos. That kind of devotion might seem alien to anyone who hasn’t seen the show, but we understand. Firefly has always been a show that deserved more than it got.

Unfortunately, deserving better than and deserving this now are two different things, and the timing of the show’s return starts to feel a bit icky when the logistics of what and who’s involved come into play. Because you cannot talk about a Firefly revival without asking some genuinely puzzling questions. Why is this thing animated? Or, why is the show about a timeline we already know the ending to? And, most importantly, why in the hell are Adam Baldwin and Joss Whedon earning mentions?

The Problem with a ‘Firefly’ Animated Prequel: We Already Know How It Ends

Here is the thing about Firefly that fans seem to have collectively agreed not to remember: we already got our movie. Fox cancelled the show after just eleven episodes, and the fans revolted with the kind of sustained, organized passion that would make political campaign managers green with envy. Then, in 2005, Universal bankrolled Serenity in what felt like an act of penance for network TV’s screw-up. The film took some big swings, killing off fan favorite characters like Wash and Shepherd Book (Ron Glass) while solving some of its biggest mysteries, like River’s arc and the origin of those terrifying Reavers. It ended with something that felt bittersweet and real with the crew, depleted and bruised, flying off into the verse, because…well, what else are you going to do?

That is the ending to this story. It’s not perfect, because no ending involving Wash dying can be called that, but it is an ending, one with emotional stakes and the kind of consequences that can’t be walked back without cheapening everything that came before it. The proposed animated series is set before all this, though, somewhere in between the TV show and film, which means it will unfold in a universe where we already know how things go wrong. Asking audiences to revisit that timeline isn’t giving them more story; it’s just making them watch a cartoonish funeral procession in slow motion. And who really asked for that?

A ‘Firefly’ Comeback Can’t Pretend Joss Whedon and Adam Baldwin Don’t Matter

You cannot talk about a Firefly revival without talking about Joss Whedon, even though this project is trying its hardest to do exactly that. Whedon isn’t attached. He’s been kept at a careful distance, receiving only a “Created By” credit while Tara Butters and Marc Guggenheim serve as showrunners. His absence is being presented as something that should ease fans’ concerns, but what it actually proves is that everyone involved knows his name now functions primarily as a liability. And the reasons are well-documented. Over the past several years, a collection of collaborators, from Charisma Carpenter, to Ray Fisher, Gal Gadot, and more, came forward with accounts of behavior described as abusive, cruel, and staggeringly hypocritical from a man who’d built his entire brand on being Hollywood’s feminist ally. But keeping him out of the revival talks while simultaneously staying tight-lipped on the real reason why is both a frustrating cop out and a missed opportunity for the show to reclaim its legacy.

Your Fate Has Been Calculated
You’d Survive In…
Advertisement

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. Read all five — your result is the one that resonates most deeply.

The Matrix

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things, the places where the official version doesn’t quite line up. In the Matrix, that instinct is the difference between life and permanent digital sedation. You’d find the Resistance, or it would find you. The machines built an airtight prison. You’d be the one probing the walls for the door.

Mad Max

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you. You don’t need comfort, community, or a cause larger than the next horizon. You need a vehicle, a clear threat, and enough fuel to outrun it. You are unsentimental enough to survive that world, and decent enough — just barely — to be something more than another raider.

Blade Runner

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely. You read people accurately, keep your circle small, and ask the questions others prefer not to answer. In a city where humanity is a legal designation rather than a feeling, you hold onto something that keeps you functional. You’re not a hero. But you’re not lost, either. In Blade Runner’s world, that distinction is everything.

Dune

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards. Patience, discipline, pattern recognition, political awareness, and an understanding that the long game matters more than any single victory. Others come to Dune and are consumed by it. You’d learn its logic, earn its respect, and perhaps, in time, reshape it entirely.

Star Wars

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way. You’re someone who finds meaning in being part of something larger than yourself. You’d gravitate toward the Rebellion, or the fringes, or whatever pocket of the galaxy still believes the Empire’s grip can be broken. Whatever you are, you fight. And in Star Wars, that willingness is what makes the difference.

Then there’s Adam Baldwin, who allegedly helped coin the #GamerGate hashtag in 2014 — a campaign we now recognize as an organized harassment movement targeting women in gaming and one that would become a template for far-right online organizing. Baldwin maintains he was simply opposing political correctness. The women who received rape and death threats might have a different recollection. And yet Fillion showed up at Baldwin’s house in a teaser video — knife, apple, knitted beanie, the whole bit — as if his antics throughout the intervening decade were just quirky missteps.

Firefly’s fandom has always been unusually personal. This cast played these characters long before Hollywood came calling and superhero franchises offered starring roles and network TV shows made them household names. Fans supported, conventioned, ran Twitter accounts, petitioned, and more. They deserve better than to be let down by a revival that asks them to overlook two of the most uncomfortable names attached to it.

Why the ‘Firefly’ Animated Revival Faces an Uphill Battle

At Awesome Con, Fillion told the crowd that the fans’ dedication had kept Firefly relevant for 25 years, and that a revival was something they deserved. It’s a genuinely sweet thing to say, even if the show still doesn’t have a network or streaming home and is currently seeking one via Instagram engagement metrics. (The Browncoats are, once again, being asked to save it. Some things never change.)

And then there’s the animation question, which nobody in the reunion photos seems eager to address. A big part of Firefly’s appeal was its scrappy, on-a-budget energy — those dusty, banged-up sets, practical effects, hair and makeup magic, and intimate camera work. Can animation deliver that same vibe? Will it even try? The hard truth is that Firefly was great…one of the greatest things ever made on television, actually. And it certainly deserved more seasons. Just, maybe, not like this.

All-Girls Boarding School Teacher Allegedly Raped 2 Students

Published

on

A former teacher at an all-girls boarding school in Massachusetts has been charged after he was accused of raping two of his students.

Matthew Rutledge was indicted by a grand jury after two of his former Miss Hall’s School students, Hilary Simon and Melissa Fares, testified against him.

Rutledge, 64, was charged nearly two years after Simon, 39, and Fares, 33, first came forward with sexual abuse allegations against him, according to NBC News.

At the time the victims first came forward, the DA’s office declined to charge Rutledge with a crime because the accusers were 16 when the alleged incidents took place. The age of consent in Massachusetts is 16, while the state law does not criminalize sexual relations between teachers and students regardless of how old those involved are.

“They have waited far too long for justice and, while I recognize our office took time to develop a path forward, I hope it is evident that I remained committed to holding the Defendant accountable for his crimes,” Berkshire District Attorney Timothy Shugrue said in a statement on Tuesday, March 24, per the outlet.

Additionally, the DA’s office said they are in the process of sending Rutledge a formal summons. Once that is complete, he will be given an arraignment date by the Berkshire Superior Court.

A high school math teacher accused of putting his hand inside a female student’s waistband while they were alone inside of a classroom has a history of alleged inappropriate behavior at other Connecticut school districts, according to court documents. Darien High School teacher Sean Boardman, 59, of Westbrook, was arrested on January 30 in connection […]

“We stand with the Survivors whose courage and determination played an indispensable role in this outcome, and we are grateful they will finally have the opportunity to seek justice in the criminal case against Matt Rutledge,” Miss Hall’s School said in a statement.

Chief operating officer at the DA’s office, Julia Sabourin, confirmed that Rutledge has been charged with two counts of rape against Fares and one count of rape against Simon.

It is not currently clear if Rutledge has entered a plea or retained legal representation in light of the charges.

Fares was allegedly abused by Rutledge from 2007 to 2010 and Simon was allegedly abused from 2001 to 2005. They were both students at the school during the time of the alleged abuse.

Both Fares and Simon testified before the grand jury on March 24, per NBC News.

“There were too many moments where it felt like it might not go anywhere,” Fares said, explaining she was relieved that Rutledge was charged. “So I held onto hope, but also protected myself from expecting it … That’s part of what makes this moment feel so significant.”

Simon also said that she feared Rutledge wouldn’t be held accountable for the alleged assaults.

“What I do know is that Melissa and I were clear from Day 1 that there was never any consent,” she said. “We never wavered on that. Not once. And I think that consistency, that refusal to let anyone reframe what happened to us, is part of what kept this case alive.”

Rutledge previously worked at Miss Hall’s School as a history teacher, coach, adviser and department chair.

The local DA, the Pittsfield Police Department and the state Department of Children and Families then all launched investigations into the allegations against Rutledge.

The report found that Rutledge had been reported for inappropriate behavior to school leadership multiple times over the years and determined that the school failed to act on the report, per NBC News. The report also found that Rutledge abused five girls over a 20-year span.

JoJo Siwa Gushes About BF Chris Hughes Inspiring New Song

Published

JoJo Siwa and her boyfriend, Chris Hughes, are putting their love on full display, with the reality star serving as the muse behind her latest song.

The “Dance Moms” alum continues to seize every opportunity to share how she has found love in Hughes’ arms and just how happy she is.

Their bond appears so strong that Siwa is now even envisioning a lavish wedding, a decision that was never really a priority for her before.

JoJo Siwa Says New Song Was Inspired By Her Love Life

The bond between Siwa and Hughes appears deep enough to inspire music, as she revealed that her song “Serendipity” was drawn from her relationship.

The track, set for release on April 7, is fully credited to her boyfriend, and Siwa is not holding back her excitement. “The inspiration behind that is my very sweet love Christopher,” she gushed, adding that their relationship embodies the meaning of the word, which pushed her to write the song.

Siwa also shared insight into what keeps their relationship strong, explaining that it comes down to recognizing when something is truly right. “I think that when it’s meant to be, it is, and when it’s meant to be, it’ll be right,” she said sweetly to People Magazine.

JoJo Siwa Shares The Moment She Realized She Was Head Over Heels In Love

The release of Siwa’s love-inspired song comes after she revealed the defining moment that confirmed her feelings for Hughes.

As The Blast reported, Siwa realized her emotions ran deeper than affection, recalling advice she once received from fellow artist Meghan Trainor: “You will know you love somebody when you love them so much you want to duplicate them and you want to pop a baby out that is made from them.”

Those words resonated with Siwa just months into her relationship, something she later shared with Trainor herself. “One of the first things that I said to her after I started dating Chris,” Siwa recalled. “I was like, ‘I get what you’re saying now.’ I love [Chris] so much. I need there to be a mini [Chris].’”

Her feelings were further solidified when Hughes sent her a childhood photo of himself, which she described as incredibly cute.

Music isn’t the only area Hughes is impacting in Siwa’s life. The singer’s love for her partner has grown so profoundly that she is now considering a grand wedding, marking a huge shift from her previous mindset.

“I’m happy. I’ve never wanted the future so bad. I’ve never, ever wanted the love that I have to just continue to grow,” Siwa said while describing her emotions.

She admitted that she had never been someone who “craved” a wedding. While marriage was not entirely off the table, the dancer had always imagined something simple, like going to Vegas or signing a “piece of paper” without the grandeur of a big ceremony.

However, her perspective has changed completely. “Now I’m like, ‘No, I want a ring, and I want my dad to walk me down the aisle, and I want a first dance, and I want butterflies,’” she explained, per The Blast.

Chris Hughes Reveals Siwa’s Playful NSFW Nickname

The couple’s openness about their relationship extends to their bedroom activities as well.

Hughes, a former “Love Island” star, revealed the unique nickname Siwa has given his private parts, The Blast reported. “She calls my balls Jimmy and Timmy,” he admitted, joking that she must enjoy rhyming.

He added humorously that he was not entirely on board with the names, saying, “I don’t know about those names. I have names that I like. I’m still kind of undecided on them.”

While Siwa has been vocal about her happiness in love, she has also addressed moments tied to her past insecurities.

As reported by The Blast, an incident occurred in October 2025 during one of her concerts. A fan, Anjali, wore a hoodie featuring a meme that mocked Siwa’s hairline, an image that had circulated online for years.

Although the fan claimed it was not intended to be hurtful, she was escorted out of the event.

Addressing the situation on stage, Siwa made her stance clear: “You’re not going to come to my concert and bring a hoodie making fun of me. No way! No way, man! Thank you for coming. I appreciate it! But we’ve only got room for infinity hearts in here, right? Not in my house, baby,” she said, earning cheers from the crowd.

Bahamian Police Official Charged With Murder After Shooting

Published

on

A Bahamian police official has been charged with murder following his involvement in the fatal shooting of a Florida man, which he claimed was an act of self-defense.

Berneil Pinder has been charged with the murder of Cody Castillo, an employee of Pike Electric. Castillo was working on a major infrastructure project for Bahamas Power and Light at the time of his death.

Pinder, 51, appeared in court on Wednesday, March 25, before Acting Chief Magistrate Ancella Evans and he was formally charged, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

Media outlets in the Bahamas reported that Pinder, who serves as superintendent for the Royal Bahamas Police Force, was denied bail. He was also reportedly ordered to return to court on July 23 for the presentation of a voluntary bill of indictment.

Pinder appeared in court just four days after Castillo was fatally shot outside of popular beach spot Da Plantation Bar and Grill.

The RBPF initially said in a news release that the altercation started inside the bar and grill, though the men eventually went outside. Police said that Castillo drove his truck toward Pinder “in a threatening manner,” and Pinder fired a single shot as he feared “for his life.” The single shot eventually led to Castillo’s death.

However, officials later obtained video footage of the incident that seemingly contradicted Pinder and the RBPF’s account of the incident.

Before Pinder was arrested, the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a statement expressing the “deepest concern” about media reports that stated Pinder followed an unarmed Castillo to his vehicle before he fatally shot him.

“We urge the Government of The Bahamas to ensure the victim receives justice in this case without delay,” an embassy spokesperson said in the statement.

It is not currently clear if Castillo has entered a plea or retained legal representation following his arrest.

Following Castillo’s death, a loved one set up a GoFundMe page to help his wife, Makayla. The page explained that the couple was expecting their first child together in August.

“Makayla is now facing the unimaginable: grieving her husband while preparing to bring their son into the world alone,” the post read. “She’s overwhelmed by the sudden loss, the weight of funeral expenses and the uncertainty of how she’ll manage living costs and care for her baby without Cody by her side. The pain and fear are real, and she needs help from anyone who can offer it.”

Bahamas Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis said that authorities are taking the investigation seriously.

“I have asked for a full and transparent investigation, and where the evidence supports criminal charges, the law must move swiftly,” Davis said on Tuesday, March 24, per the Tallahassee Democrat. “The badge can never place anyone above the law.”

‘The Pitt’ Just Reached a 5-Minute Breaking Point That Changes Everything

Shabana Azeez and Gerran Howell in The Pitt Season 2 Episode 9

Editor’s note: The below contains spoilers for The Pitt Season 2 Episode 12.

Much of the drama on The Pitt Season 2 has revolved around the mental health status of Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch (Noah Wyle). He was on the verge of a nervous breakdown for the entirety of Season 1, but it felt like he would be on the path to healing in Season 2. Instead, Robby is faring even worse — and it’s gotten so bad that some fans are even wondering if The Pitt would go so far as to kill off its lead character.

Robby isn’t the only one struggling, either. Charge nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa) arguably keeps the ER running, but what she’s experienced, not just during this shift but in Season 1, is starting to drag her down. In Season 2’s latest episode, “6:00 P.M.,” Dana finally raises her concerns about everything she’s been seeing from Robby over the last several hours, but Robby is quick to call her out in exchange. No two characters matter more to The Pitt, yet they’re the ones who may have finally reached their breaking point.

What Happens in ‘The Pitt’ Season 2 Episode 12, “6:00 P.M.”?

Every doctor and nurse in the Pitt holds Dr. Robby in high regard as senior attending, and although they might notice him struggling, there’s nothing they can do to get through to him. Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) has already expressed his concern for what his friend is going through, but the only other character who seems willing to call it like she sees it is Dana. Given her longtime friendship with Robby, it’s no surprise that these two are willing to broach more uncomfortable topics with each other.

‘The Pitt’s Most Intense Med Student Breakdown Has a Much Deeper Hidden Meaning

Shabana Azeez explains how Javadi’s experience in Episode 9 mirrors the real-life pressures med students face every day.

When Emma Nolan (Laëtitia Hollard) is attacked by a patient, Dana intervenes, drugging the assailant with a syringe she conveniently had in her pocket — only Robby suspects it wasn’t so convenient, and that Dana has been carrying that syringe around ever since being assaulted by a patient in Season 1. Robby’s role as attending also puts him in a tough spot where he has to consider the potential legal repercussions of Dana giving a patient a sedative that wasn’t originally prescribed.

The first time the two argue, Dana cuts the conversation short by walking away, but Robby isn’t willing to let the subject drop. He’s concerned that she’s not acting like herself today, which is exactly how she feels about him. Their conversation ends with Dana declaring, “It’s like you’re just tempting death ’cause you don’t give a shit anymore.” It’s a brutal truth that is made obvious from the first scene of Season 2, when Robby is shown riding his motorcycle to work without a helmet. Robby’s so far gone that when Dana calls him out, it doesn’t even phase him, whether because he’s lying to himself or simply no longer cares.

Robby and Dana Are Dealing With the Same Pain in ‘The Pitt’ Season 2

In the aftermath of The Pitt‘s latest patient attack, Dr. Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball) tells Dana she did what she had to, but the fear in her eyes speaks volumes; she’s scared that she may have messed up in a way she can never come back from. With how little attention he pays to his next patient, Robby is wondering the same.

The leaders of this hospital are having a hellish day on top of the trauma they already carry. Patients have died, the computers are down, and ICE agents have one of their own away in handcuffs. By the end of The Pitt‘s latest hour, Robby mentions not knowing whether he can leave the ER in its current state, but Dana boldly asserts that the hospital can survive without them, just as it did after Robby’s mentor passed.

As Dana storms off, Robby is stunned into silence. It’s a heartbreaking conversation to witness, but one that needed to happen. The Pitt‘s two best characters are teetering on the brink and could still fall over the edge by the end of this shift. Let’s just hope they’re both still strong enough to endure whatever comes next.
