Meghan Trainor Opens Up About Health Scare That Led To Weight Loss

Meghan Trainor’s weight loss journey began with a health scare during pregnancy.

“I’m getting a lot of hate online just posting who I am, and everyone’s like, ‘Why are you thin now? You were ‘All About That Bass’ girl,’” Trainor, 31, said during a recent appearance on iHeartRadio’s KIISFM. “And I was, like, 19 when I came out with that, and I’ve been on a fitness journey since I got healthy — and it started when I was pregnant and I had gestational diabetes.”

According to Mayo Clinic, this type of diabetes is diagnosed during pregnancy and, like other types of diabetes, “affects how the body’s cells use sugar, also called glucose.” It can cause high blood sugar, which can affect pregnancy and a baby’s health. Diet, exercise and lifestyle changes can help control gestational diabetes.

Trainor added that she wanted to stay healthy post-baby so that she could be as strong as possible for her tour and be able to lift her two sons, Riley, 4, and Barry, 2, “out of their cribs without pulling [my] back.”

“Now I’m strength training three times a week in the gym, and I am so focused on health, and now I’m obsessed with my hormones, my gut,” the pop star continued. “I just want to feel good because this job is hard if you don’t feel good. But I got a lot of hate for being thin, so it confused me and rattled me.”

Following Barry’s birth in July 2023, Trainor — who rose to fame with her body positivity-centric single “All About That Bass” in 2014 — began to slim down considerably, sparking many conversations online about her weight. Many people accused her of using a GLP-1 injection like Mounjaro, Ozempic or Wegovy to shed pounds.

While Trainor has admitted to using Mounjaro in her weight loss journey, she explained in a March Instagram post that she used the drug as a supplement to her diet and exercise plan.

“Feeling so honored to be recognized by @billboard Women in Music as a Hitmaker — what a dream! But it’s a little disheartening that so many of the questions (and comments) were focused on my body instead of my music, my passion, or the decade of hard work that got me here. This is what it’s like to be a woman in the music industry,” she wrote. “No, I don’t look like I did 10 years ago. I’ve been on a journey to be the healthiest, strongest version of myself for my kids and for me.”

Trainor continued, “I’ve worked with a dietician, made huge lifestyle changes, started exercising with a trainer, and yes, I used science and support (shoutout to Mounjaro!) to help me after my 2nd pregnancy. And I’m so glad I did because I feel great.”

The “Still Don’t Care” singer later revealed that she and husband Daryl Sabara tried Mounjaro together.

“We were like, ‘We have to make sure we don’t lose muscle that we worked so hard gaining all those years,’” she said of their experience taking the medication. “We stay in the gym, we work out, we eat right, and we just noticed that we were less hungry.”

Trainor added, “I was like, ‘This doesn’t affect me.’ Yes, it did. I cried so much. They got to me. And my therapist was like, ‘You give them a lot of power,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I wish I didn’t.’ So I’m trying to learn at 31 how to not give strangers power.”
