‘One Battle After Another’ Passes Final Global Box Office Milestone While Debuting to Instant Digital Success

If you’ve spent any time online in the last week, chances are that you’ve come across a bunch of clips from One Battle After Another, which debuted on PVOD platforms a few days ago. Audiences that didn’t watch the movie in theaters are only just realizing how funny it was, while those that did are rediscovering the joys of what has to be one of the most re-watchable films in recent memory. Coincidentally, the film’s instant success on transactional services is unfolding at the same time as it celebrates what will likely be its final box office achievement. After nearly two months of release in theaters worldwide, One Battle After Another has passed the $200 million milestone.

With $70 million domestically and another $130 million from overseas markets, the epic adventure comedy’s global haul is now sitting at an exact $200 million. While it probably has some gas left in the tank, One Battle After Another will probably not hit the $250 million mark. There has been a debate about how successful the film is, considering its reported production budget of $140 million — the biggest of director Paul Thomas Anderson‘s career. But even though it might not have broken even theatrically, it’s the kind of film that will continue earning revenue for Warner Bros for years to come.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro, One Battle After Another follows a former revolutionary’s efforts to protect his teenage daughter from a vindictive military man in a weirdly wonderful alternate reality. The movie opened to critical acclaim, and is now resting at a “certified fresh” 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator’s consensus reads, “An epic screwball adventure teeming with awe-inspiring action set pieces, One Battle After Another is Paul Thomas Anderson’s most entertaining film yet while also one of his most thematically rich.”

‘One Battle After Another’ Overtook Several Hits During Its Theatrical Run

According to FlixPatrol, One Battle After Another debuted to instant success on the PVOD market. It was the number one film domestically on iTunes and Amazon on November 16. On the global box office charts, the film has now overtaken the likes of Guillermo del Toro‘s Oscar-winning The Shape of Water, the Denzel Washington-led blockbuster The Equalizer, and Michael Mann‘s crime classic Heat, cementing itself among the 200 highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time.
