One of the Most Underrated Fantasy Movies of the 21st Century Heads to New Streaming Home
Less than half a decade after its initial theatrical release, The Green Knight is already showing signs of future cult success. The movie underperformed at the box office but received excellent reviews. Perhaps noticing they’re onto something and that the movie will likely stand the test of time, A24 also gave the movie a special physical media release. The Green Knight debuted in 2021, and is now heading to the free Tubi streaming service to be discovered by a bunch of new fans. Directed by David Lowery and starring Dev Patel in the titular role, the film was adapted from a 14th-century poem; instead of being archaic, however, it offered a decidedly contemporary deconstruction of fantasy tropes and ideas of masculinity in cinema.
Like most of Lowery’s movies, The Green Knight was acclaimed for its visuals. It now holds a “certified fresh” 89% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “The Green Knight honors and deconstructs its source material in equal measure, producing an absorbing adventure that casts a fantastical spell.” True to form for a cult classic in the making, the movie holds a 50% audience score on the aggregator, accurately indicating how divisive it was upon original release. Produced on a reported budget of $15 million, The Green Knight grossed only around $20 million at the box office. Lowery has successfully maintained a one-for-you-one-for-me approach in his career, and his last release was the Disney+ children’s film Peter Pan & Wendy. He’s now directing an epic melodrama for A24, starring Anne Hathaway and Hunter Schafer.
Dev Patel Has Developed Into a Formidable Artist
Having broken out with the 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, Patel has pushed the boundaries for South Asian actors in Hollywood, with roles in the successful HBO series The Newsroom, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Chappie, and Lion, for which he received an Oscar nomination. He most recently starred in the horror film Rabbit Trap, and made his directorial debut with the action film Monkey Man. Also featuring Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Sarita Choudhury, Barry Keoghan, and Ralph Ineson, The Green Knight will debut on Tubi on December 1.
