Ryan Coogler Confirms the Fate of Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ Following ’Wakanda Forever’s Success

It’s no secret that the Black Panther films from Marvel Studios are a massive success, as these Marvel superhero solo films generated over $2.1 billion worldwide. And with some of its characters set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler reveals that the story of Wakanda will continue post-Phase 6 of the MCU. In a recent report, Coogler confirmed that Black Panther 3 is coming and will be his “next movie.” Unfortunately, further details about this upcoming Marvel installment are not available yet; perhaps due to Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, as Letitia Wright‘s Shuri/Black Panther, Tenoch Huerta Mejía‘s Namor, and Winston Duke’s M’Baku are tied to the upcoming superhero team-up. When asked about the next Black Panther movie, Coogler said:

“If it was anybody but you, I would say, ‘I can neither confirm or deny,’ but we’re working on it hard. […] Yeah, it’s the next movie.”

Coogler started his career in 2009 and has since produced 15 projects and directed eight films, 1 TV show, and 1 TV film. His most recent project is the 2025 film Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, which has grossed $367 million worldwide. Other films he’s made include 2015’s Creed, The Sculptor, and Fruitvale Station, to name a few. Outside the Black Panther films, Coogler was tied to a few other Marvel projects, including the Eyes of Wakanda and Ironheart series. Additionally, he has produced other titles, like 2018’s Creed II, Space Jam: A New Legacy, 2023’s Creed III, and Anthem.

What Is ‘Black Panther’ About?

Black Panther first came out in 2018, starring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, aka the Black Panther. Before the solo film, the character first appeared in Captain America: Civil War in a minor role. The film followed Black Panther, a superhero who’s also the King of Wakanda, a country in Africa that possesses vibranium, one of the strongest minerals in the Marvel universe. Following the 2018 feature’s release, it grossed over $1.3 billion, making it the 7th-highest-grossing film in the MCU, sitting between Deadpool & Wolverine and Iron Man 3.

In 2022, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premiered, showcasing how Wakanda moves on after T’Challa’s death and welcomes a new Black Panther as Shuri picks up the mantle while grieving the loss of her brother. The feature generated over $859 million worldwide and was nominated for five Academy Awards, including “Best Supporting Actress” for Angela Bassett. The next time any Black Panther characters will return is in Avengers: Doomsday, as some cast members have been confirmed to star in the feature. Only time will tell what their roles will be once the Avengers team up once more.

Both Black Panther films are available to stream on Disney+. Follow Collider to stay up to date with the latest updates.
